Now that we are getting close to the Fleet 7 cruise to Catalina (leaving August 2) I've been thinking more about the families.
The original plan was for us men to sail the boats from San Diego 100 miles to weather, with stops at Oceanside and Dana. Then sail to Two Harbors. We intend to reserve a boat in camping cove, also spend some time on the string line.
Originally, we thought that we would have the families take the Long Beach Ferry to 2 Harbors. Actually, that's quite expensive. It makes a lot of sense for us to sail over and pick them up.
Anyone have a marina up in that area where we could park 2 cars for 5 days or so and pick up guests? I'd be willing to get a guest slip but also willing to pick them up, throw their stuff on board, and leave right away.
I've been thinking to use the Schooner's dock in Seal Beach (there is plenty of parking there) but it would be better if we could do this semi officially.
Any one out there that can help would be appreciated very much.
When the families head back, I am going to return to Emerald Bay, then sail around the west end to Catalina Harbor, and then wait for the conditions to be right for a sail to Santa Barbara Island. I then intend to return to Avalon with a stop in Little Harbor, followed be either an overnight all the way home or a return stop in Dana.
Everyone is welcome on this trip. All or part.
Expect to pick the families up Monday August 9 and return them Friday August 13.
My trip is Ausust 2 through 20.
If everything goes according to plan the run to Santa Barbara Island will be either Aug 7 - 8 or Aug 15,16
I checked with the marina --they said they would love to help out. They have an end-tie slip which is always kept open -- it would make pick-up and loading very easy. The parking area is patrolled by Coast Guard security and Harbor Police -- vehicle descriptions and license plate #'s can be provided to them because cars will probably be parked there 72+ hours.

I don't know how many will be going back, but if you prefer not to go back and forth from the island, those family members could return on the ferry from Two Harbors to the San Pedro terminal Two Harbors-San Pedro ferry (cheaper one-way vs. roundtrip), which is a short cab ride ($5?) back over the bridge to the marina/cars.

Thanks very much, Fleet 7 will talk this over and firm up our plans. The ferry info is useful, I think for the Baumgart family, for $23 per person one way (times 3 people) I will ferry them. Others may make different choices.
We MAY change the dates a little to accomodate being there over a weekend. Aug 9 - 13 for the families is Monday - Friday. The kids like the live bands and party atmosphere on the weekends in 2 Harbors.
My rebuilt hard dinghy is all ready to go for a sea trial...I'll have to post some photos. It is not a work of art like some of the others we've seen recently. Should be great for speeding from a boat in camping cove to the 2 Harbors dock!
I checked out the "loading dock". It's pretty big -- two C25's end to end could load at once if so desired. It's on the end of the 2nd finger dock from shore, between a big a green crane on a work barge on the finger dock closest to shore and a big catamaran (Cantana 48) on the end of the 3rd finger dock from shore. A Catalina 27 with no sails is moored about 30 yards off the loading dock.
To get there from sea:
The waypoint at the center of the entrance at Angels Gate (Angels Gate Lighthouse) is at W33 42.530' N118 14.983'. From there (all bearings magnetic), go 299 deg. for .58 nm to the Red Can (W33 42.924' N118 15.498'). From there, go 325 deg. for .95 nm to the entrance to Fish Harbor (W33 43.813' N118 15.906'). Along this section, the Coast Guard station followed by the federal prison will be on the left. From the entrance to Fish Harbor, go 300 deg. for .18 nm (avoiding any moored boats) to the loading dock (W33 43.940' N118 16.064').
Here's an aerial photo --
The Red Can is near that boat (you can see its wake) just to the left of the broad point of that big, white land mass. Fish Harbor is essentiall in the very center of the photo.
Here's another view --
Fish Harbor is about 10:30 from the center of the photo.
