On the "lines aft" theme again, I've seen pics on Tech Tips where cam cleats are used (offset to fit them in the narrow space between the hand rail and the pop-top), and others with rope clutches. What do YOU like?

Dave,

For halyards lead aft, I have always been an advocate of rope clutches. More so because I have used them on the boats I race more often than the other. IMHO, when cleating a rope that you more often than not lock it and leave it the clutch has

Thanks, Duane... Good point about locking in. I wouldn't want my boom topping lift to let go while motoring home! Not being a racer or spinnaker flyer, I'll probably get clutches.

Dave - I have both! On starboard I have 3 halyards running thru' a triple clutch to a winch (OK - I only use 2 at a time!).
On the port side I have 2 cam cleats (mounted side-by-side and as far aft as they will go) which hold the cunningham & vang. Obvio

Dave,

My boat came with a triple clutch on the cabin top between the pop top and handrail. Since purchase I've installed a similar unit on the opposite side. These six clutches hold the main halyard, topping lift, boom vang, reefing line and port and s

Dave,

Forgot to mention, this is on the project list for us this spring. We are going to go with two double clutches, one on either side. Jib Halyard and Pole lift on one, Main Halyard and downhaul on the other. I don't want to do the boom vang beca

Use a cam cleat anywhere you tighten the line by simply pulling on it. This means after a winch or on any line which needs light pressure. Use a stopper on a line before a winch. You can always unload a stopper, but if the forces are too high, you will

Excellent point made by Greg Jackson regarding line working load. No matter how taut we make our halyards for those >=15 knot days, we can release our Lewmar rope clutches with one finger. We replaced an off-brand clutch because it was too difficult
