RichardG, you go to 2 Harbors all the time, right? How would you like to do a little scouting for us? We would like to reserve a boat in camp site close to 2 Harbors. Next time you go, would you sail over and check out Rippers Cove, Paradise, and Lava Wall ?

Here are the coordinates and descriptions:

I'd like you to scout a site that has a good anchorage, big enough for 3 boats, a nice beach, and hiking/snorkeling. Protected waters that don't rock and roll too much!

I think we'll take 2 nights in the campsite and then go to the stringline for 3 nights. What do you think?

Do you plan on camping on the beach? Or just anchoring and "using" the beach during the day? Remember, despite the island's environmental-type name, the Conservancy is a for-profit entity (aka Mr. Wrigley's legacy) -- the cost for camping is per person and can get up there for a large group. To keep cost down, perhaps you could reserve a spot for just a couple people to camp overnight and any others sleeping on their boats could just be "visiting" during the day if the ranger checks.

I haven't camped at any of those spots, but on previous trips by those areas I've liked the look of Cabrillo and Rippers the best. Both seem to have reasonably good ancoring, which is confirmed by Catalina anchoring info (I'll also double-check in my chart book). No matter where you go, getting a place with a picnic table is definitely preferred. I think Cabrillo offers a little better protection for anchoring, is more isolated and the Little Gibraltar area looks fantastic for snorkeling, exploring, etc. However, it's a ways from the Isthmus (i.e. long dinghy ride, unless you have a fast one). Rippers is a closer dinghy ride to the Isthmus, and the pretty spot with the picnic table under the shady tree could be good if it's hot.

My next trip to the Isthmus is planned for 7/9 - 7/11 for the Catalina West Coast Rendezvous.

Plan is to reserve the camping on the beach spot for the kids only for 2 nights.
