OK, the mast came down, the sheaves were replaced, I only dropped a washer, screwdriver, and carabiner in, and the mast went back up in 4 hours on Saturday. Just about everyone on L dock helped at one time or another! A lucky bounce saved 1 of the sheaves. Note to self - I am never lifting the mast without an A frame again. I tried to use a line going to a block attached to the bow pulpit, then to my main winch. I gave this up when the pulpit began to bend upwards at an alarming angle. 2 stout men, Spike, and a boy on the winch got the job done, however.

While that was going on, Amy and her friend and Mike's kids took a 2 hour kayak trip. We were all worried - but it was at least partly the Dad's fault since we didn't set any realistic limits (just gave them the paddles and a shove off the dock). When they returned (soaked and tired, buit laughing) it was time to go sailing. I drilled them like a budding America's Cup crew (although they didn't know what Americas Cup was!!). Back to the slip for a barbeque. Get the kids and wife headed for home. Then we helped the Cavins get Valkyrie's mast up (they have a gin pole and tackle - what a contrast). By this time it was almost 10 PM and the end of quite a boat day. Mo's excellent rum punch and Sea World fireworks really put a cap on it.

Up at 5:30 for fishing. WInds blew all night. The sea was choppy and I had reefs in right away. The unusual SE wind meant that Pt. Loma kelp was out of reach, so I turned dead down wind and ran to the La Jolla kelp under reefed main (sailing over 4 knots). The choppy seas (2 foot wind chop, S 4 foot swell and W 4 foot swell) didn't seem too bad running downwind. Really needed the preventer, though! 5 fish later (including 2 large baracuda) it was time to head for home. Hey! Mission Bay was directly into the wind (go figure). Now the seas seemed really bad. I was taking heavy spray all the way into the cockpit, heeling to 40, and making 4.5 knots under reefed main and 135. I really wanted to put the 110 up but it was just too rough to even think of going to the bow. The autopilot (named Bob) really couldn't handle it. One hand on the tiller, one ready to dump the main. My 25 year old Shaffer roller furling has two settings: all the way out or all the way rolled in. I needed to point as high as possible and that big mess of a partly rolled sail just won't do. Instead, everytime the boat wanted to round up I just pointed it as high as possible and tried to get some distance to windward. 2 hours and 4 tacks later, Mission Bay seemed like heaven. It was 6 hours on the water in very tough conditions. I could barely tack the boat because as soon as I went to the leeward winch and started cranking we were heeled to 40+ and I really couldn't get it in very much.

Home by 5 PM and I am really tired. Pool, hot tub, and a good dinner with the family sure helped. By the way, I checked my log and this wmakes 91 days at sea since Jan 1. (Iron man, iron boat).

OK

Now the Catalina Cruise

I think my family has picked August 9 through August 13 as the week they are going to spend on the island, and I'm going to ferry them myself from Larsons Marina in Los Angeles, with the help of RichardG.

That OK with you other Fleet 7 cruisers??

Jim,
This is why we were late for your mast lowering/raising.

Glad we weren't earlier, could have been really wild pulling the boat during a police chase...

Julianne will be a resident of Los Colinas Womens prision for a while, then she'll become a tenent at State Department of Corrections (it was a felony). Her fate won't help those poor people who were wrecked and fell down a 60 foot embankment.
