Here's the latest from the "I ought to have me head examined department"
I have decided to completely renovate my kitchen/dining room area. this includes taking out a wall, installing exterior doors and windows in a load bearing wall, cabinets, flooring etc. The worst part is I'm doing the work myself.
I should be working on the boat or sailing when the wind is up.
At least I'm doing it during the summer doldrums, hopefully I'll be finished for fall sailing. Hopefully I'll make money off this work when I do sell, and then have more money for a sailboat.
You will! And you'll enjoy and be proud of your work 12 months out of the year! Just take a half day off for a sail now and then--to prevent hammer blisters.
1) Standing in front of a mirror, grasp a 20 oz hammer firmly in your right hand. 2) Smack yourself forcefully in the middle of your forehead. 3) Repeat step (2) until all notions of remodeling are gone. 4) With money saved, buy a boat, head for Mexico and enjoy yourself.
Remember the timeless advice of an old sailor.
-- When I was young I spent all my money on booze, broads, and boats... -- The rest I squandered. -- (anon)
I spent most of April and May upgrading the boat with expectations of sailing when the summer winds arrived. NOT. I am in the closing phases of a complete bathroom and laundry room remodel. Down to bare walls except for the shower stall. Also doing much of the work myself. Sometimes you just have to keep the Admiral happy to get any sailing in at all. Just finished hanging the doors, now on to the trim, then put in the vanity, cabinetry and reseat the toilet and I'm free to sail when I want. The worst part of the whole experience is now SHE knows what I can do and other projects are coming to her diabolical mind. Chin up, your time will come.
All of my major remodels, (kitchen, bathrooms, finished basement, bedrooms,...etc) have all been scheduled over the winter when the boat is on the hard. This is done so as not to interfere with my sailing and to give me something to do in the offseason to pass the time.
If it were not for my mandatory annual haulout, nothing would get done at the Lucier house.
Doesn't your boat have a Galley you could be remodeling.....
Much like Don, my attic renovation into a family room gets done only in the winter. I have everything framed out and the electric runs are made. The skylights and insulatin is in...one more winter on the hard and I'll have drywall, carpeting and Air conditioning...You have to keep the Admiral happy!!!

Frank, I think it might be easier to pick up girls with a sailboat vs. a new kitchen. " Hey baby....wanna come over and check out my Corian countertops?"
Another solution, altho' it takes boat units away from the boat is to have the work done and not do it yourself. We are expanding the lake house (home) and I am sailing - some.
