The existing fresh water tank mount and battery mounts have rotted away. I have removed all of the rotten plywood, fiberglass cloth ect. to a smooth clean surface.
I have built a frame for the tank to sit on. It is made of 1/2" 5 ply A/B Grade with waterproof glue. Two pieces laminated together with epoxy to make the frame rails 1" thick. Frame is 2" tall. The rails are made into the end pieces using stepped mortise and tennon and glued with thickened epoxy.
I plant to install this into the compartment so the tank sits back in its original position.
What do you think of this setup? My biggest concern is if the hull oilcans, will there be too much point loading where the sides of the frame meet the hull. I can add larger pads to the ends of the rails where they meet the hull to spread the load better, but do I need to? Its not too late to change it.
What is the original setup on these old girls?
You can see what I'm doing here. http://home.wmis.net/~dhapp/tanksupport.html
Thanks everyone,
Dan

Dan,

That sounds about like what I did. To attach my tank mount shelf to the hull, I epoxied ('epoxy' has become a verb in my world) some fir or plywood sticks to the hull, and screwed the tank shelf to those. As trailer boats go, these hulls are thick and stiff, but if you're worried about creating a hard point, slap a couple more layers of woven roving a few inches in diameter on that spot with some epoxy.

By the way, I'd say that 1/2" and 1" plywood are overkill. (Not that there's anything wrong with overkill.) I think I used 1/4" or 5/16" panels with 3/4" mount points.

Also, the further forward you can shove the water tank, the bigger batteries you'll have room for behind it. I used a custom 16-gal tank, and managed to cram in two group-27s in boxes.
