All the running rigging on Lady Kay (3) is dirty, and somewhat hardened. Initially I was going to replace it all and my decorator was already working on a color scheme. But, surprise , the budget is rapidly approaching defcon 3, so I had to go to plan B. Today I took the jib sheets and put them in the washer. (okay, I have one of those fancy Calypsos with an oscillating bottom, but I don't see any reason why any washer wouldn't do) I set it for heavy dirt with a soak cycle, and even added some softener for my tender little hands... I had to redistribute the load only once for an imbalance durin spin cycle. Lo and behold, it took years off their age, They are as good as new. It did take a while to untangle the mess after it came out, an activity the cat thought was designed strictly for its entertainment.... They are in the sun drying as we speak.
Get some of those net zippered bags that the gals launder their intimate junk in. Mine are about 12x18" when flat.
I put maybe one jibsheet in each one. Or, a couple of small dia. lines in one.
They won't tangle as much and you can wash them together with tuff cloth things like jeans or socks or my boat rags.
Don't put them in the dryer, tho. Hang them in big loops on a non-ferric hook or something to dry. I hang them on my workshop cabinet doors partially opened. They'll dry overnight.
I know someone who cleans lines/sheets in a tumble washer at the laundramat. They can take quite a load without becoming unbalanced and if the machine does conk out...run!
My jib sheets are clean since I have hank-on ... But my main sheet can really use it. I'm too lazy to take it off (the blocks), so maybe I'll take the whole thing off (blocks included) and let it sit in a bucket of soapy water (L.O.C.amway liquid organic cleaner - really mild stuff) and swish it a bit.
I wash mine on regular cycle with a laundry detergent with added oxy-product, and use a two rinse cycle. Then air dry them hanging on whatever. Also wash golf balls (in a basket) in the dishwasher. Love modern appliances.
