Just bought a Yamaha 8 HP 4 stroke High Thrust with power tilt for one of our customers. Very nice engine for a sailboat. The usual high Yamaha quality. Same prop diameter as the 9.9 HT (11 3/4 in. ) and about 2 inches less pitch (6 3/4 in) as engine turns 1000 RPM faster (5500 instead of 4500) at WOT. Same gear ratio and thru hub both ways exhaust. Very substantial mounting system with provisions for four bolts plus clamps. Donna could tilt this one which she cannot do with our 9.9. Just push the button. The only disappointment is a smaller alternator (6 amp vs.10 to 15) Will run it first time Sunday or Monday. Further report coming. Dave
I have a T8 on order and hope to have it by next weekend. The XLS 25" shaft model is harder to find one, I guess the factory dosn't make many of them. I am also disappointed that the alternator is so small - 5 amps at WOT means that the output is practically zero at normal cruising speed of 2500 rpm. So the alternator is virtually useless. I didn't know the prop pitch is smaller! I though the T8 and the 9.9HT had the same prop!
The alternators on these engines are not linear with RPM so the output at low speeds is better than you might expect. Also the Yamaha spec is 6 amps so you are already up 20 %. Fired the engine up yesterday and was as usual pleased with the result, quiet, no smoke, everything OK. Tilt system is nice. Tiller handle is a lot stronger than the older engines and less liable to break . Dave
