OK, does anyone ahve experience with the morring balls at Annapolis Harbor. This weekend will be my first attempt at using one. My plan is to back to the assigned mooring, hook the pennant, then manipulate it forward to one of my bow cleats (taking both cleats if the pennant allows. I'm bascially single-handing.
My questions are:
1. What type of pennants are used on these balls (I understand that there are several types)? 2. Are there are nuiances of form or coutesy associated with such a mooring? 3. Does one simply hail the water taxi when one is ready to go ashore? 4. How likely am I to draw ridicule and laughter?
Any help will be greatly appreciated, and repayable in beer should we be in Annapolis at the same time.
This site is a GREAT resource full of VERY helpful folks.
Shawn, Not familiar with the mooring ball situation in Annapolis, but I will offer you the use of my Walker Bay dinghy for the season if you like....it's easy to tow and will fit on the foredeck if towing it is a problem. Let me know if you would like to give it a try...it's just hanging in my garage. Nate
As for the dink, I appreciate the offer. Have one at my disposal already, but find that it REALLY slows me down . But with the oar locks and sail kit, I love to use it around the creek down in Reedville.
Mooring in Annapolis harbour is a great experience. The pennant is 1/2" or 3/4" line. You might want to use your boat hook to grab the line and put your own 3/8" line through the loop. I have singlehanded into Annapolis several times you should plan on getting there early the moorings fill up quickly. If the moorings are full there are slips in ego alley that are not hard to get into.
The moorings in Annapolis are in three places. You have the ones right in the main harbor in front of ego alley, you also have a group of moorings just past the Spa Creek bridge which are restricted to boats under 35' and if you continue up Spa Creek there are new moorings in the first small cove on the port side. All the moorings are the same price $25.00 per day which will be collected by the harbor master patroling the moorings. You can also get free tokens on shore at the harbor office to use the showers and facilities located next to ego alley. The water taxi can be hailed on VHF 68 and will pick you up right at the boat. I recomend mooring beyond the Spa Creek bridge because you get less traffic. ( The bridge opens every half hour on the hour). Also if you get there mid afternoon a lot of the moorings are taken by boats just there for a couple of hours and usually later in the afternoon there are more available for use especially up Spa Creek. Excuse my ignorance, but can you tell me about the pennants on these mooring balls?
Are there whips on the balls to ease in catching the lines? Are the lines of the floating variety? How long are they? Do you find them relatively easy to catch?
Must one call ahead to request one, or is it strictly first-come first served?
