Any idea why I'm having such a hard time getting my Main sail up and down? I've been doing my gym workouts, so I'm "strong like bull". I don't know if the halyard lines inside the mast are jamming or the plastic pieces which attach the sail to the mast are getting stuck. Any ideas? This is the original Catalina sail. The boat is slipped and I don't plan to step the mast if I can help it.
Maureen, try a little spray silicone on the sail slugs. This helped mine tremendously. Also, watch for folds in the main as you raise that will cause the slugs to collide and jam. The silicone helps to alleviate this. DO NOT USE WD40, use spray silicaone instead.
On the general forum there is advise to leave a taper, (or was it tapir), in the track between the first and second slug. The wax will lube every time the sail goes up or down.
Maureen - if you plan on using silicone spray, get some McLube. It doesn't attract dirt as the other sprays do (it's designed for a marine environment). I use it on the sail tracks, the traveler, and the mainsheet blocks - it's great stuff! Derek
Maureen watch to see what the top slug is doing as you raise the sail. Because the head of the sail is solid and you are pulling from the solid headpiece the top slug may be cocking in the track and binding. I found this to be a problem on mine and replaced the top slug with a slug with a stainless bail (WM page 1084). This gave the slug a little more room to float so it wouldn’t cock as bad and bind in the track while being raised. It made all the difference in the world. This is only a problem only with the top slug because all of the others don’t have anything else to bind against. I think it was brought up in an earlier post that most sails have a larger slug at the top. I would like to find one like the one on the clue of the sail for the top slug. Has anyone seen these available anywhere?
