oh Dave, you have touched on a subject so dear to me. Spending all my 50 summers on Neebish Island I grew up watching the "Fitz" sail by every 5 or 6 days. the captain would always have the Indians games playing on the loudspeaker,he was generous with salutes (three longs and two shorts) the crew was friendly and would and shout to us kids on shore. When she went down November 10 1975 I wept as though I lost a friend. That gale was particularly bad a friend of mine was the wheelsman on the Arthur Anderson sailing just 10 miles behind the Fitzgerald. The seas were in the 30'+ range and it is believed that the wave that drove her to the bottom could have been twice that height. Lake Superior was a gentle lady while we were on her but she is well known for her tirades.
