I am looking a purchasing a Catalina 25 with the outboard motor mounted on the port side of the transom. I understand the C25 was designed to have the motor mounted on the starboard side. How serious is it to have a port mounted outboard?

The earliest C 25s were ALL mounted on the Port side....possibly the first 2,000, or close to it. My '78 has a port side mount and I PREFER it. The ONLY downside I can think of is that SOME of the early boats will lean a few degrees to port, and the outboard may be some of the reason. I think it is somewhat correctable by placing stored items (batteries/water, etc.) to starboard. (which is where they are on my boat. I does NOT have a list.

Don't shy away from the boat because of this! There ARE many many upgrades and maintenance items that could/should have been done to an early boat. Do a little research on the archives and you will find what some of them are. If the boat is very original, you may be able to negotiate a good price.

And read what you find on this forum with a grain or two of salt. Yes, there are LOTS of things to keep maintained or eventually replaced on any older boat, but don't necessarily think that everything is a crisis.

I agree with Gary. Someone has happily sailed the boat for about 25 years with the outboard mounted on the port side. It's hardly worth considering.

If you go ahead with the purchase, let us know which boat (which hull number) it is. With a portside motor mount, I would assume it is a '77-'82 model year. If you are moving up from a smaller boat like a Catalina 22, you will love the extra room inside!

As Gary and Steve have stated, a port mounted outboard is pretty much a non-issue. I have this setup on North Star and I, like Gary, actually prefer it.

Larry -- My '81 has starboard motor mount. I recall someone previously mentioned the mount was moved to starboard sometime in early 1981 model year - and this event was about a year after the separate gas tank locker was put in (1980 model year).

Port motor mount, starboard water tank, batteries moved to starboard. No list. No difference between my boat (1978 Fin Standard Rig port mount of Honda 8 HP) and Garys (1989 Wing Tall Rig starboard mount of Honda 8) - EXCEPT Catalina made numerous small improvements between 1978 and 1989 and the 89 wing is a much nicer boat. 78 Fin points a little higher.

My thanks to all who have commented. You are correct in assuming it is an early C 25. It is a 77, though I do not have the hull number. I will be jumping from sailing club owned Lido's to a Catalina 25, whether the one I am looking at now or another one later, so my whole family will be able to enjoy sailing as much as I do. I suspect I will have a lot more to learn than where the outboard should be mounted so you will probably hear from me again.

Thanks again for you help. I will watch the forum and participate when I feel I have somthing to contrubute.

Just for history sake, I have a 1980 C-25, with a port mounted outboard, no seperate gas locker, 2 batteries, fresh water tank under starboard bench. Hull #2138

What is your boat named? What keel type (Fin, Swing, or Swing-to-Wing conversion?) and which interior style, Tradional or Dinette?, Standard or Tall Rig?

Presently the boat is named "Pier Pleasure" (due to change, I just bought her in May 2004). It has a fixed keel (fin), tradional interior, standard rig, pop-top.
