We recently purchased a 2004 250 wing keel sailboat. The literature says that the fuel tank box will hold a standard 6 gallon tank. Uppon searching the web and visiting a few marine stores I have yet to find a tank that will fit. Has anyone found a tank that will fit in the box? THANKS, PETER
I bought a 6 gallon red plastic tank from west marine. It is snug but fit in. When filling I leave it in and use a funnel. Love the extra fuel capacity it affords!
I believe the 6 gallon tank that fits or at least mine is a metal tank. Its more of the older style. They can be hard to find as most places only stock the plastic one. I am having a custom one made out of aluminum. The guy told me he feels we can get about 10 gals in there. I will let you know. Let me know if anyone else is interesrted maybe we could get a group rate!
Suzie, do you have or remember what the WM catalog number is for the tank you purchased? I've looked, but haven't found one the correct size here locally.
Jerry, I bought the tank off their shelf, about a year and a half back. It was the third tank I had bought locally that finally fit. Looking in my West Marine catalog, page 303 my tank looks like the Temp Valu model 304487. I'll check on the boat tomorrow to see if there are any markings to Id brand. Mine stays put so I can't recall if there is any "see thru" as described with the Tempo tank.
Suzie, thanks very much. I will see if my local WM has one after I get through tiling my laundry room floor and the 60 foot Queen Palm off my house, that got snapped in half in the storms today. The General has her priorities you know.
Suzie and everyone else thanks for the information. I tried a metal tank and the one I tried wouldn't fit. The measurements for the Tempo value 6 look like its to big but I see it fits. I've ordered one and hope to have it in a couple of days. Thanks for all your efforts. PETER

Frog, please post a picture of the tiled palm when you're done....
Today I bought WM Model 214809 6 Gallon metal tank for "Close Quarters" Hull 250WB #265. I took my measurements to WM and bought the tank that looked like the best fit. Well, it fits perfectly, but boy was surprized when I looked at the reciept! $99+tax - At least I can easily take it in and out for fueling.
We've got the same 6 GL tank as Suzie. We put it in the fuel locker BEFORE attaching the fuel line to the outboard. It's a very tight fit, but the extra fuel we can carry over the 3.5 GL tank is wonderful. With the 6 GL tank (& a spare 6 GL strapped in by the swim ladder if we're out for a week-long cruise) we have no concerns about how much fuel we use or refueling. The only problem is that with this tank you need to look inside to see how much fuel you have left & you will need to refill it while its in the fuel locker.
I recieved the Tempo value 6 tank today and it fits if not a little snug. I haven't gotten the bill but I'm hoping it's less than the 99 dolars for the metal tank. Thanks again, PETER
This is a bit distressing. I'm getting a Honda 9.9 OB for my new boat. Does anyone know if there will be any hassles getting their standard 12 liter plastic tank into the fuel locker. Unfortunately the website image is no help. I don't have the dimensions of either the locker or the tank so I could figure this out myself. One plus if it does fit: there is a fuel gauge in the cap (unlike the Tempo model previously mentioned). I'm waiting on a call from the engine vendor.
Jeff the 12-liter tank (3.5 gallons) which comes with the 9.9 Honda fits with plenty of room. What everyone here is trying to do is to get a 6-gallon tank in the same locker. The 3.5-gallon Honda tank I have does have a gauge in the cap, which is very readable from the top of the locker.
Well, our WM finally got the Value 6 in stock and I now have it in the fuel locker. I sure like the idea of starting with six gallons over three. Since it is difficult to remove for filling I took the filler nozzle off my jerry can and went to my local auto store were I picked up a 18 inch piece of fuel hose that fits over the end of the fill nozzle very tight. Now I just slip on the hose and pour in the fuel, no spill no mess. As for fuel available I measured the distance between the 1/4 tank marks on the tank and used them to make a dip stick for checking fuel available. The 1/4 tank marks all have different measurements do to the shape of the tank. The dip stick is not perfect, but plenty close enough for good estimates of range as long as you plan a reserve. I use one gallon for that purpose which gives me a little over one hour of running time.
Thanks again Suzie for finding the reasonable priced answer.
thanks for the info. Extended range & less frequent refueling is alway good, but it almost sounds like folks are tying to put 2 pounds in a 1 pound bag.
My C250 #089 has a Honda two and a half or three gallon tank with plenty of room around it for a funnel and extra quart of oil. I don't question the want for a six gallon tank but, I personally am comfortable hauling around another three gallon can of fuel. I just refilled the main tank after useing up what I had in the main tank from early May. I think doing this helps to eliminate old gas from gumming up fuel systems etc. I can go a long way with my Honda 8 at just half throttle if needed, but prefer to go find wind instead. Just my two cents. "Bear' awaitng the remains of "Bonnie" and "Charlie" in upstate N.Y.
Sorry for the late response, but lost track of this topic.
I went with the 3.5 gallon tank. I really like your idea of storing some extra oil & funnel outside the cabin. What was your experience with oil consumption during the first few hours of operation for your Honda?
Jeff, I haven't put one drop of oil in that Honda other than normal oil changes. I do like the idea of a spare quart, funnel and sponge being stored out of sight. I just refilled the gas tank the middle of August and that will get me through Sept. I also carry a 2 1/2 gallon jerry can where ever it fits in just in case
