I am thinking about putting a smaller table in my SK 25. The pedestal I am looking at has a flush mount receptle fo rthe cabin floor. Does anybody know how much room is under the cabin floor? As near as I can tell it is about 2.5 in.
Do you have a traditional ("booth") dinette, or do you have the L-dinette? I think it might make a difference. I have an L-dinette, and the pedestal is mounted just to port of the keel trunk. I'd estimate there is about 4" of space under it, but I'd have to look to make sure.
I'll be taking a trip to my boat this coming Wednesday ... I could take a closer look then if you need me to ... just let me know.
Buzz, Are you back in the water or still on the trailer? I haven't seen Freya out on the lake or in Bastrop. With the baby on the way haven't seen much of my boat either. The Admiral's five days overdue and counting. Later, Sid
Mine came with a custom round table on the existing pedestal and mount. I'm thinking of putting an original or larger table so that I can more easily lower it to make a double berth. Do I smell swap shop in the makins? We are in eastern VA. Jack
Might it be easier just to trim the top of your original table ... or make another top to mount on the existing hardware? - Clam
That's what I did. The old table had a stain on it ('think it was caused by battery acid from a leaky battery that a PO left sitting on it ). I bought a bunch of teak printer stands on eBay and cannibalized the long pieces to make a new table ... it was a lot of work, but I'm pleased with the results.
"Catman" ... since you first wrote your post, I've looked at photos of the dinette table ("booth" type) ... it doesn't look to me like there is a pedestal under the booth type dinette table ('just a support leg), so I'm guessing you've got an L-dinette. If so, I'm sure there is more than only 2" of space beneath the pedestal.
I haven't checked, but maybe Catalina Direct (or Catalina) sells the bracket that screws into the bottom of the table top, and fits over the top of the pedestal post. If they do sell them, you could buy one and make a new table the size you'd like ... then simply replace the new smaller table with the old one when/if you want to make it into a sleeping berth ... 'just a thought.

Hi Sid,
I'm still high and dry for the time being. I plan to do a little work on the boat tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday morning ... I haven't had a chance to work on her in quite a while.
Best of luck with your new baby ... 'hope everything goes smoothly!
My original layout was a traditional interior with a swing keel. The drop down table is a pain for my wife (First and Only Mate) and we bought a table pedestal that flush mounts on the cabin sole. I have already made a 20" x 30" table top with teak trim (hand made) so I am ready to install the flush mount and didn't want to drill through the hull by mistake (okay on the the trailer, but not good for in the water).
Instead of folding up the table (traditional) I can just pop the new one out of the flush mount when we are not cruising.
Incidently, this forum is extremely helpful for newbies, and I greatly appreciate the knowledge that is shared.
Well, I mustered up some courage and went through the cabin floor (first with a very fine drill in case it wasn't a good idea). I found that there is at least 5" or more of clearance- Buzz was right. I made a new 20" x 30" table top with some laminated counter material and made corner moulding from a teak board. The corners are cut at 45 degree so it is easier to sit down. Since it is flush mounted, we can pop it out and store when we don't need it.
We used on our L. Michigan cruise and it was the perfect size. I will post picture when I get my ISP service setup.
I am really interested in this project. I have the L shaped dinette, too, and get tired of the table ALWAYS there. My issue is that we have the custom bed arrangement so that we sleep athwartships.. I would need a second smaller pedestal to reach "sleeping height"...or did you find some sort of adjustable pedestal that will still move out of the flush mount? Curious about where you found the materials....
