Hi everyone,

I always look at the sailboat listings on eBay, and I saw something this morning I've never seen before. There is a listing for an Islander 24, and in the photos you can see a sort of canvass "basket" hanging off the transom ... it reminds me of a commercial laundry hamper.

I can't figure out what this is for, and it looks like it is permanently installed. Here are a couple of photos ... 'anyone have an idea of what this thing is used for?

Shutterfly cut off the top of the second photo ... you can see the basket behind the outboard a little better if you look at the listing on eBay. Here is a link: Islander 24 on eBay

What is this thing

My best guess is that it's used to store an extra can of gasoline, so there's no chance of spillage inside the boat.

That definitely looks like a live bait tank. It has small holes in the sides for the water to drain out and a pump puts fresh seawater in on top. However, I've never seen one mounted on a sailboat. Live bait would definitely increase fish production. Some of the local kayak fishermen are customizing their "boats" by mounting small live bait tanks.

Nah--laundry basket with a pump to keep socks and undies from gettin' stiff. Good for beats and reaches--not so good for runs.
