Guys, I'm really getting tired of running aground. I'd like some recommendations for a depth gauge. Just moved the boat to a new lake and I'm finding all the low spots, and spilling beer at the same time. The beer part is really starting to bug me.

RL,

I have been extremely pleased with the [url="http://www.raymarine.com/raymarine/ProductDetail.asp?site=1&section=2&page=227&product_id=397"]Raymarine ST40 Bi-Data System[/url] that I installed.

The alarms, including two anchor alarms, and the water temperature function have been big pluses.

I also had the Raymarine ST40 installed (bought the non Bi-data System) Love it, very accurate...can't waste beer!

I'll third that recommendation on the Raymarine Bi-Data... at my age a consideration in choosing a system was getting the biggest display digits I could find.

Crazy Question!: I have what I think is the original Datamarine depth guage. What I'm wondering is whether I could get a new depth guage but still use my old transducer? I guess I hate the idea of opening up a hole on the bottom of my boat and would love to replace my current unit, but am concerned about having to take the old transducer, which is a thru-hull, out and putting a new one in there. The ST40 looks like a great unit!

If the original is still installed it is probably due for a re-bedding anyway... so you might as well go with a new transducer in the existing hole.

Yes, holes in the bottom of the boat are scary, but if properly done, thru-hulls present no big worries. IMHO stuff this.

I like the Garmin combo GPS/Sounder units - the GPSMap 168 and 178. The 168 is under $500, and gives me all the navigation data I am ever likely to need (except radar) in one instrument. I guess if you are located on a small inland lake, GPS is not something you will miss...

This thread about original equipment has me wondering: what is the original equipment in an '83 C-25? I've got a Standard Horizon depth gauge and a Signet knot meter.

Well, up unti now I thought Standard Horizon was original equipment. I have both depth and speed instruments from Standard Horizon. I had a bad wire earlier this spring and thought it was the display unit. When I checked on replacement, the cost threw me for a loop. I believe it was about $145 just for the digital display. Luckily I discovered it was just a broken wire. While the cost is steep, they are great units. Since they were mounted on the starboard cockpit bulkhead, I didn't relish filling those 4 inch round holes and thus the consideration of replacing instead of a less expensive unit. They have nice plastic "coffee can lid-like" covers to protect them from the elements when I'm not onboard. Looking to the future, I don't know what I'll do when I do have to replace them.
