When I bought my '83 C25 the jam cleat for the mainsail was mounted under the tiller, so that in order to uncleat it was necessary to pull down on the sheet, and this in turn required moving inboard at the very time you're hit by a puff. I decided to move the cleat and the block to the boom. Now it is much easier to uncleat. I wonder what others may have done with the mainsheet. Any comment?
"jam cleat for the mainsail was mounted under the tiller"
Are you sure? If so, something was modified by a PO.
The mainsheet control should be fitted to the traveller, which spans the area above the tiller. Take a look at the documents linked on the second page of this site...specifically the parts list illustration showing the traveller assembly.
