I think the 25 sails better, but I bought a 250 because I wanted a new boat and I feared old boat problems. If I had to do it over, I think I would of took more time and shopped around for a mint condition 25. I like some of the 25 interior layouts a wee bit better as well. Could of had a few extra bucks left in my pocket. If sailing performance alone was your only deciding factor, start shopping around for a 25. My two cents.....On a positive 250 note, I love my boat, and since I bought it new, I know it inside out. As far as performance, it meets my needs.
I wonder what Jerry (Pretty Penny II) thinks...he used to be a C25 guy and then went to a 250. Derek (still recovering from altitude sickness in Co.Springs.)
I've never sailed a 25; bought the 250 because one was available, and I liked it, and my wife liked it when comparing interior layouts. We wanted a comfortable cruiser for a family of four, something that would seem big enough for 3-5 days on the water; a boat that would be good to learn on, and a good snorkeling platform on hot days. With its open layout and open transom, the 250 has served extremely well in these capacities. Her performance is not especially fast, but not embarrassing either. In terms of looks, I think the 25 is the more handsome boat, and from everything I read it is also the faster boat and stiffer in a strong wind. If it were just me, or just me and my wife, a 25 might have been the way to go, but for now it's a family vessel we need. In a few years we'll re-evaluate - though by then, who knows? Maybe we'll sneak into a Seaward 32...
I think Reuben has it just right. The C-250 is a great family fun platform, and the C-25 may be a slightly better serious sailer, especially in "big water." Both are great values, and as Suzie points out, the C-25 will leave quite a few boat units in your pocket--although you'll probably spend a few making up for some slightly aging stuff or having some work done. (You'll also spend a few more than you thought on a new C-250 for all the little stuff that makes it the boat you really want.)
Well, I gave my thoughts on the topic, but same thread in 25 specific. So if your interested its there. This thread would have been better in the General forum since it request opinions about both.
A fellow in our club just got a 250. He was sold on Catalina after a ride in my 25 fin. It was avaliable and a good price so he got it and loves it. I havent been on it yet but it looks good. I walked around on it the other day, haven't been on one before, and I liked the lay out and ease of walking to fore deck at the dock. Will let you know more when I get a ride on it. I love my 25 though.
Hello, I'm gonna "weigh in" on this one. If you swim and you are over 40 and/or you are not an Ian Thorpe type you will appreciate the open transom for the ease in getting back aboard from the water. I didn't have a 25 prior to my 250 but the boat I did have required a climb over the transom AKA a four foot vertical effort and tho' absolutely hilarious to behold another's effort to climb aboard it was really tough. I'm a bigger fella 6'3" 230 but my wife is small and in shape and it was terrific for us both to switch to the open transom. Chris Wray

I just purchased a 250 WB and have been a 25 owner. The things I wanted over the 25 was: Wheel steering w/ motor controls, Inclosed head, walk out transon (easier if you like to swim off of the boat)and easier trailering. The 25 seems to sail a lot stiffer but I really don't know about performance.
