I've come across a few extra BU's and am thinking about a new sail. I'm leaning twards a 150% Genoa, or a 155% Drifter. What are your suggestions? I currently have a 110% Genoa. What extra hardware will I need for either?
There is another 250wk on our lake that had only the 110 Jib. We race quite often against each other and I was always beating him badly (I have the 135 Jib) even when he had a former pro (Hobie) at the helm. The "Pro" talked him into buying a 155 Genny.... Bad mistake..... The sail is too big for the boat... It is always getting hung up on something especially in light air. If I was going to get a larger head sale, I would go with the "Drifter" as it is made with a light (Spinaker type) material and would probably be much easier to handle. The 110 is very good when the wind pipes up (15-20knots +), but in light winds is not as powerful as the 135. It depends on your prevailing winds. I have been very satisfied with my standard 135%. This year, I was consistantly in the top 3 and came in 2nd in both our Tues nite series and our Labor Day race (On corrected times, even beat a J24 and a J22!! My nemisis is a Capri 22, but I did beat him once this year! Just wait till next year .
I had the same choice a while back and chose the 150% genoa. Since I do not race, if I get overpowered, I just crank in the furler and make the sail smaller. In light air it is perfect.
Thanks.. Looking at the work with the Gennaker (I do a lot of singlehanding) and this is probably not a good option, I'm leaning towards the 150 Genoa with a Rope Luff for my roller furler and just roll it in when need be (I do a lot of light air sailing).
