I have a Cat 25 1987 I just bought and I would like to see if anyone has replaced the original bulkhead between the dinnett and head. The wood is rotten and I would look at either replacement or use Wood RX and put sst strips where the bolts fasten to the bulkhead. This is a Trad dinett,Hull #5550. Thanks, this is a great forum.
I've seen recent threads on this topic... try a forum search on 'bulkhead' and I think something will pop up. You've already figured out your two options!
My "vote" would be to replace rather than use Wood RX.
An additional concern should be why the bulkhead is rotten. If from water leaking down the upper shroud chain plate, you will want to insure that the wood core in the deck is still sound. Enough water to rot the bulkhead would potentially be enough to rot the deck's core as well.
Yes, the leak was through shroud, deck appears solid. The fasteners seem to have moved 1/4 to 3/8 inch. The boat is inside a building and out of the weather (especially since a hurricane is on its way thru central Florida. Is there a pattern or someone who makes this piece. I contacted CD and they were clueless. Any comments appreciated. Thanks
Here's what I'd do. 1. Remove the upper shroud chain plate completely. 2. Remove and replace the entire bulkhead. Use the old one as a pattern to mark and cut out the new one. 3. Re-install the upper shroud chain plate making sure to completely seal the hole in the deck. Use the upper chain plate to position and drill new holes to secure the chain plate to the new bulkhead.

Questions about the major structural pieces of the boat should be directed to the Catalina Factory in Woodland Hills, CA, not Catalina Direct in Rancho Cordova. The factory may still have original line drawings of the bulkheads with the exact dimensions needed to cut a new one, or the Parts Department may have actual replacement bulkheads already cut and ready to install.
I did this job on my old santana 21, leaky chine plates. It was kind of scarry taking in the saw to cut out the old bulkhead. The santan is a much smaller boat, no head liner or electrical to worry about, and much smaller working loads. Unless you have done a lot of fiberglass work and feel very confident in your own abilities I'd seriously consider taking the boat to a yard, at least for an estimate. They will probalby spot something you missed too. Use this information to either up grade what you will do yourself or help deicde if you want them to do it. REMEMBER when working with fiberglass to allways use protective clothing, long sleeve shirts, adaquate dust mask, gloves. And clean up as you go, rubbing alchol is great for this. If you do the work take photos to help remember how things go back together. Look up west system products they have a lot of information for free. good luck and keep us updated.
