It seems that my winch is slipping and the keel falls ever so slightly with a dull thud. Is this an adjustment or should it be replaced. Suggestions please?
No real suggestion other than to be safe rather than sorry. I think a new winch/cable set up is not TOO expensive. There are posts on the tech pages. Get 'em through Catalina Direct or Catalina Yachts. I'd just make sure that what you're experiencing is not just the cable falling off itself as it unwinds; you know, like a weird wrap or something that would bounce a bit as the tightened cable unwound. Just check to see if it's winding relatively level on the spool...Good luck.
Richard, I agree with Gary on the cable. When I crank up Wind Shadows keel the cable will sometimes override causing an unsettling thump and slight keel drop when I lower it again. Try watching the cable and winch while it is raised and lowered. There is not much you can do to stop the override because of the weight but you will know what is causing the noise.
Have had the same "klunk" during keel actuation and agree that it's caused by cable overlap/slipping. No harm, no foul, but a bit of an extra instantaneous load on the system--fortunately it's over-engineered. Finished a complete keel "overhaul" this week, which included a replacement of the winch. Added a small teak wedge between the winch and the companionway step upon which it is mounted (approximately 4 x 8" 1/2" thick tapered to a fine edge). The thick end is aft to properly align drum face with the keel cable. This results in a cable that winds fairly evenly across the drum--avoiding any sudden slip of cable overlap the cable winds or undwinds. The parts cost is reasonable, and all parts may be obtained from Catalina. Got great service from the parts department at the factory. They can be reached at (818) 884-7700, extension 253. Also spoke to the factory-support folks, who recommended an inspection of the keel pin area for wear in the keel hole. The keel is made from cast iron, which is softer than the bronze pin and has a tendency to elongate over time. This was the case with our boat, an '84 model. A small bushing was required and the pin was replaced in the process. The folks at Catalina seemed to feel that this was the most important inspection to perform other than that of the cable (obviously the most important component to be concerned with!). Due to the extensive weight of the keel and the fact that the boat is kept in the water full-time (i.e., don't have a trailer), hired the keel repair to a local boat yard. Took nine hours of labor total to drop the keel, bush, reassemble, replace the cable and winch. Total cost of parts approximately 200 dollars. There has been quite a bit of disscussion about the integrety of the swing keel system, but found that ours was in reasonable shape after 18 years in salt water and am confident that the recent "overhaul" will stand her in good stead for a few more.
