I'd like to replace my teak companionway boards with something that requires no maintenance, and if possible, I'd also like to be able to use the new companionway cover as a cockpit table. Many boats use smoked lexan in place of teak. Strong, private, no maintenance. As far as I can tell, it is not available for the Cat25. I've searched on the web, but the prices for a 31x31 sheet of lexan are astronomical. If anyone knows of a good and not-too-expensive source, please let me know. Second choice would be the UV resistant board that West Marine sells. Still, a 3/4" 48x48 sheet sells for $250, still a lot more than I was hoping to pay. 1/2" thickness in either material would probably be strong enough, and a lot cheaper, but the current companionway boards are 3/4", so I figured I'd stay with that unless the price is exorbitant.
Once I find a suitable material, I'd like to have the hatch do double duty as a cockpit table. I have some ideas for how to design this, but I know that this idea is not new to this forum. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
