Has anyone with an older CDI furler upgraded to the new enclosed flexible furler drum (actually the whole lower unit)? Is the installation easy? Any tricks to it?

If you upgrade I recommend the ball bearing upgrade, it made the world of difference to my older FF4 (plastic sleeve)Ron Orion SW FL

I replaced the entire lower drum unit with the more "open design", my old unit only had a small hole for the furling line. I also replaced the nylon bushing with the roller bearing unit. The changeover was very easy and done with the mast up. The upgrade has been well worth the money and easy to do.

The upgraded drum/lower unit cost is $278 including shipping for the non-roller bearing unit. It's part of an claim related to damage caused by an errant anchorer. I spoke with the owner of CDI who explained that the roller bearing unit would only provide marginally better performance compared with improvement I should expect from the newer FF drum as a replacement to my old furler (about '82 model). The old drum was a completely open design, with only 4 thin, metal bars covering the drum. It had always worked satisfactorily, but was not necessarily designed to take a crushing blow from a 30,000 pound sailboat with inadequate ground tackle.
