I know there are cast iron (swing)keels but I'm hearing conflicting comments on some of the swing keels being lead.
Are there swing keels that are lead? or all of them cast?
I am thinking of putting one in salt water and if there are some that are lead I might consider it. Lead is soft though and can a lead swing take the beating in heavy seas? Is that why there all cast (if they are)?
I understand there are more than a few "swingers" kept in salt water. Mine is one. NO big deal if you maintain it and keep zincs on it. (zincs are sacrificial metal to corrode instead of the cast iron>)
There IS actually a lead swing keel available from Catalina, however, it is for the C-22, not the C-25. I think it is standard equipment on the Catalina 22 Mk. II (not sure what model year the Mk. II starts at, but 1994 rings a bell). This keel is mostly fiberglass, in the same shape as the original so it complies with one-design rules, and it has a 400# lead block encapsulated in the bottom foot or so of the keel.
