Our 1995 Catalina 250 WB just went through hurricane Charley, tied securely to a dock in Florida. We have not personally seen the boat since the hurricane, but understand the only damage was that the mast snapped in two, and the roller furling is hanging in the water. Has anyone had a similar experience? At the moment the boat is still tied to the dock. Where do we start? We have contacted the insurance company, but they have not yet called us back. Should we look for a new mast or a used mast? What other damage should we look for? Should we get a professional boat inspector? Any input would be helpful.

Wow, sorry to hear that. This is the first report I've heard of our people having damage. If it was me, I'd be right out there to cut away the wreckage before it does more damage. Take some pictures first. Call the adjuster.

Tough luck, but at least you are not hurt (I hope). I agree with Ben. Leaving the mast flopping around could seriously damage the hull or any other boat nearby. Take LOTS of pictures from many angles and closeups of any damage. Check below for hidden damage. Forgive me for overstating the obvious: Save the damaged parts until the adjuster has come to survey the remains. If the jib is still wrapped around the furler it may be damaged as well. Leave it in place for now.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Sorry to hear of your lost mast. I lost a mast last year when a push pin failed. Never trust a push pin even if it is only going to be in place for a little while. Although Boat US replaced the mast, I was able to gain a significant savings by arranging with my dealer to cut the delivery cost by placing my mast on a new boat that was being delivered in the area.

I agree with Jeff & Ben - take lots of pictures then remove any wreckage that could cause further damage. Good luck!

Robert, Your report of a mast failure due to the use of a push pin is interesting and of course unfortunate, sorry for the loss. Would you give added details to what kind of pin was used and where the pin was used? Was it at the headstay? Was it a locking quick pin or a simple compression type? Did the pin simply back out or did the pin structurally fail? Thanks, the information would be helpful.

Arlyn;
Yes, it was a compression pin on the headstay. After the prior trailering,the locking pin was lost overboard so I replaced it with a compression pin of the correct size. This replacement was to be for a few days. Unfortunately, it remained in place for a few weeks because I had an emergency medical procedure. On the last day of the season, I went to the boat to take the sails off the boat because I was going to bring it home the next day. It was such a beautiful day that I made the decision to get in one last sail. I checked the pin but I could not see that the ball on the bottom had rusted closed and that caused the failure. I know many sailers, who trail their boats often, use these pins. I would not do it again.

One other thought: If you had a wind indicator and/or anemometer on the masthead & they got trashed, look for some evidence of it on the bill of sale, a reciept, or an old picture where it shows up clearly. I know they aren't all that expensive, but as long as you have the claim paperwork in hand...
