I was at the Home Depot today and noticed the gallon price for Valspar brand Spar varnish was only $10.99 . Is this any good or should I splurge on the $30 a quart Cetol? all opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

You can get the Cetol on sale for around $20...if you are patient. Cetol, if you put on a couple of coats, even in the Oklahoma sun, is good for two years. Can't speak about anything else, other than to say teak oil on the exterior is just about worthless.

Hi Tom... The price is not the issue. They're different animals. Spar Varnish makes a hard furniture-style finish, but has a couple of drawbacks for exterior brightwork on a boat. First, it can crack or otherwise be damaged in such a way that moisture can get into the wood, causing peeling and discoloration. In that situation, you just about have to remove all of the finish and re-varnish (6 coats or so).

Cetol is a soft, permeable finish that tends to wear more, but which can be touched up and recoated very easily without the need to remove the existing Cetol. As I understand it, the permeability supposedly helps prevent peeling by allowing moisture in the teak to escape through the finish. I can't vouch for that--only for the ease of touching up and maintenance.

Varnish is a good choice for the interior, which won't be subjected to the elements and the abuse. For the exterior, I strongly recommend Cetol--that quart will last you many years, including a 4-coat initial job (which is about what I did). For that, you should follow the instructions--removing old finish if any, sanding off UV-damaged (gray) teak, and wiping down with acetone to reduce oil at the surface. After that first job, it's a breeze!
