Need some help from the DC electrical geniuses on this forum. Here is the problem: my neighbor has two 12 volt batteries wired in series to supply 24 volts to his bow thrusters and a 12 volt, two bank charger. The question is, can this charger be used to charge the batteries by hooking it up as if they were to separate batteries even thought they are wired in series? As always any and all help is appreciated.

I don't think this will work unless you disconnect the series link between the two batteries when you're charging so they are isolated from one another.
Otherwise the (-) terminal on one battery is going to be tied to the +12V being fed from the charger lead to the other battery's positive terminal... the ground reference will be defined by the charger. This situation is not good.
Clam's correct. To make the charger work, you'll need to install an On/Off switch between the two batteries. The switch will break the connection between the two batteries and change the system from a 24VDC battery to two seperate 12VDC batteries. You'll run a real risk of damaging both the batteries and the charger if you try to just hook up the charger.
That is what I kind of figured, but Guest says that their chargers, 2613, 2623 and 2631 can be hook up + to +, - to - and will work for series set up. Unfortunately, the new charger he has is not a Guest. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Thanks all for the help.
