Great day of sailing Sunday but not so great in the parking lot. Has anyone replaced a mast and found a better deal than CD? (Hint of the day: if you are going to connect with a branch, even a real small one, make it a willow and not an oak). And ya, I've got acorns.

Hi Ellis,
no lead, but I take it you checked with your insurance company to see if they'd cover the cost. a fellow at our lake lost his mast while sailing and it and the sails are being replaced. I don't know his deductable but it is coming out nicely for him.

Ellis:

You may want to check with the Catalina factory (Parts Dept.). I recently priced a bow pulpit from CD -- while the factory price was only a little lower, CD nearly doubled the price when you factored in shipping. This is not the first time I've found CD prices to be noncompetitive.

Another possible advantage with the factory is that you may further save on shipping if you can arrange for your new mast to ride along with a new boat being trucked to MN (from CA or FL).

Good luck.

You can also buy the spar extrusions and 'dress' them yourself.
Likely save a few bucks if your spreader sockets, masthead etc. is
in good shape.

Here's a link for one popular mfg. Googling on mast extrusions and masts yields lots more info.

Subject: HOPPER2964.rtf quote for Catalina 25 mast and boom

Frank,

This is the quote you requested for a new mast and boom for your Catalina
25.
$2624.38
The mast is complete with 4 sheave mast head providing for 4 internal
halyards, spreaders and welded mounts, fixed mast step, compression tubes,
through bolts, tangs and pins, cleats, and gooseneck with integral reef
horns. A PVC conduit is installed to allow the installation of wiring and
lights on the mast. The boom has a 3 sheave boom end exit box, and is
internally rigged for the outhaul. The boom is configured for end boom
sheeting. they are finished with Sterling linear polyurethane. We offer many
colors and shades of white to choose from.

What type of tabernacle bracket and through bolt assembly do you have? Will
it require a compression tube with doublers in the mast base? Do you want us
to provide the wiring and lights for an anchor light and combination deck
and steamer light? Do you want us to provide a VHF radio antenna cable in
the conduit?

After you have had a chance to review the quote, contact me for any
questions you may have.

Thank you,

Don Averill

From a quick browse of the dwyer site, the mast extrusion itself should be somewhere around $600.
(about $20 per foot)
