Thanks for the welcome. I now want to get the manual for the new Honda too. My 79 C25 has been such a pleasure that I decided to do the outboard. Cruising in the San Juans with the 25 year old Chrysler seemed the smart thing to do. I will now have to get the attachment for flushing, Honda dealer? Have to yet install the new bracket from Catalina Direct after the season is over and then start the new season with the Honda. Has anyone ever used neverseize on the underwater nuts to maybe avoid breaking them off when servicing the waterpump? Jim Sweet #1490
Yes, doing the service yourself requires some mechanical skill. You can always pay a mechanic if you mess it up.
I flush my engine for 10 minutes with fresh water every time I use it. This was my old mechanic's recommendation. I had to discard my previous outboad due to internal corrosion from salt water (ouch). It's no big deal, I do it while folding sails and putting boat away.
I've got the Nissan 8hp, and decided to change the impeller myself. Maybe I should have sprung for a shop manual, but how hard could it be? A couple of broken bolts, scratched up cover, nicked fingers, and an afternoon of swear words later, got the job done. End result was nowhere near professional grade but do-able.
When I first got the boat, the local certified Nissan repairman messed up the carb, so it would not start, that made two return trips hauling the sucker and about $100 dubiously spent. Again not professional grade, but done.
So I figure its a toss up, but you might want to shop around if you go that route.
Many of the parts are still backordered from Honda. Its going to be 2 weeks and no motor for Labor Day.
Thats OK I am becoming a better sailor. Last night the wind was weird, very gusty, changing directions. We are having our hurricane too. It is way south but changing San Diego weather. When it was time to dock the wind was directly down my fairway. No way to tack to the slip. Lucky the little 3 HP kicker motor is working like a mule (but only good for the last 100 yards or so).
Sweetcraft - I call the flushing attachment I use the 'mickey mouse ears' because thats what they look like - two black rubber cups on a metal handle with a hose attachment. After dropping the last one in the bay, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was only 5-6 bucks down at west marine. Good luck -

I am so happy! The shop called Friday afternoon, the motor is done but they close at 5. I called Spike on her cell, shes 5 minutes away. So I've got the motor for Labor Day weekend and I don't even have to know how much it cost!
over $600 .... all new cooling system. I'm adding the flush kit today
the impeller had only 2 blades left. The thermostat was a plug of salt and corrosion.
All cooling passages were cleaned, new motor mounts, the motor runs great, smooth, quiet and like new again.
I put the flush kit on from our tech tips page and it workded great.
Super wind today, never needed the motor. Wouldn't you know it? Sailed 30 miles, no fish, winds gusting to 20 knots, coming from all directions at once (it seemed).
A great evening dock party on L dock and a great day for everyone!
Isn't it great when the outboard is purring like a kitten?
We also had a "super" wind yesterday, courtesy of Frances. A little too super. Wind Point sure was bouncing and dancing around in her slip. Had 11 lines on her though and she did just fine. Headed down to open her up right now and check all of my chalk marks; see where my bilge water is coming from.
Some awful pictures in the morning's paper of east coast sailboats on the rocks and laying on the bottom. Hope all of the members here came through okay and best wishes to the panhandle folks.
