I posted a few days ago that my lower gudgeon was loose. Yesterday I discovered that the two outer 1/4 in. machine screw heads were broken off! They were still there, stuck to the gudgeon by the Boatcaulk. Only one of the screws was holding the thing on.
I decided that the sheer force was enough to cause the threaded-all-the- way design to break. I made a quick dash to WM to purchase 1/4 bolts the proper length so that the sheer point was not at the threaded portion (I think they were 1 3/4).
My Buddy Paul has three pintle/gudgeons. The lowest is standard position, the one above it is just above the water line under sail. Since most days we sail in tough conditions, that is a good idea.
I have my old pintles from my original rudder. I think I will install a third gudgeon insurance.
