After a windless Saturday sail, Monday was shaping up to be a real treat. The wife and I got out to the boat at about noon, motored out and there were already probably 30 sailboats on the lake. This is a big deal because this is the first summer where we've had a sailboats-only marina with 135 slips (all full). The number of sailboats out on good days like this has probably tripled over past years because of the docks. Anyway, we hoisted the main with winds at an estimated 15-20 mph, and went to hoist the jib but we felt overpowered, so we instead put up our storm jib.
We had never sailed with our storm jib before, and I don't know if it helped us at all, but it was certainly easy to tack and jibe with it. We were pretty slow though, compared to the other boats.
Anyway, after a while wind speeds decreased so we put the genoa up and we started haulin. Great fun! I love the feel of the heel. Pretty soon we met up with fellow board member Eric Dove who was sailing Adelaide (sp?). Eric, if you're reading this, were we racing for just a little while? You looked like you had a fine, fine crew. Eric only had what looked like a 135 jib on, so I was able to leave him in my wake. Then a Hunter 260 tried to race, but quickly gave up. All in all, one of the best sailing days of the summer. Too bad I didn't use any sunblock. I got burnt pretty badly and consequently slept terribly. Well worth it though.
How sucky to not have great wind all three days! Glad you got out yesterday and ripped.
Lucky us. Good wind Sat and Mon. Got out to Oakland Estuary for lunch Sat., singlehanded around Alcatraz yesterday. Lots of boats on the Bay, needed a traffic cop!
Is it just SF, or are there a lot of really dumb stink potters out there? Guy calls the CG yesterday on 16 saying he is N. of the Bay Bridge, 38ft trawler design, has shut off his starboard engine because the fuel gauge is not working on that side. CG asks if he is in immediate distress. No. Can you make way? Yes, doing 7KNOTS!!!!! Now, this guy is 14 miles from his marina to the south. Port engine is fine, some fuel, stb tank unknown. You would think he would start S., with the tide, and call one of the three or four fuel dock stations on the way and top off, right?
Half hour later he calls CG again. Now he is two miles north and west of where he first called! Looking for fuel. Stbd engine running again. He motors right past Gashouse Cove fuel dock, never called them. Says he is now east bound by the waterfront. Again, CG asks if he is making way. Yes.
Ten minutes later he calls saying he is adrift right in front of pier 39 (and all the tourists). CG says how many on board. One. Lifejackets. Yes. Can you anchor? I don't know!!!!!!.
The guy tossed in the hook in 39ft of water and calls CG to say he is at anchor and doesn't think he is dragging!
What follows are frantic calls to Vessel Assist, CG, SF City Police, Sherriff. Finally, VA arrives to fuel him. What a Bozo (apoligies to the clown).
Since I had to work Sun. & Mon, I got out on the Bay Thurs/Fri/& Sat (lunch w/Hey Jude crew). Thurs/Fri. hardly a soul on the bay. Did some Danish Sailing (use your imagination). It was great. Used sunscreen. Us folks from the Mid CA coast are in awe of sunshine. Usually don't see it all summer. Moderate breeze and warm. Very relaxing.
Yesterday, the wind was also howling up here on western Lake Erie, but I didn't get much sailing in because I had to work. I did try to get out for a quick sail early in the morning, but as I motored out the channel onto the lake, the wind was whipping and the waves were building with whitecaps for as far as the eye could see. By the time I got to the end of the channel, I was wet from the spray and I had spilled half of my morning coffee. I decided that I had enough sailing in the previous 5 days so with some difficulty, due to wind and waves, I turned the boat around and headed back in.

I think it's a worldwide problem. While motoring back into the marina on Sunday, up the channel and coming in my direction was a large pontoon boat. It was in the middle of the channel and I thought that it was going to be a tight squeeze, but it happens every once in a while. As the distance started to close between us, this pontoon boat started drifting farther over to my side of the channel and I could see that I was not going to have enough room to squeeze by , when suddenly this guy comes all the way over and is now on a head-on collision course. I immediately swerved over to port, just missing him and I yelled, "Hey, what are you doing?" and in an indignant tone he replied, "I'm overtaking a vessel (me) on my right side!"
I yelled back over to him that he needed to stay on the right hand side of the channel, but, shaking his head like I was some crackpot idiot, he motored head on into the sailboat a few hundred feet behind me which also had to take evasive action.
