Having spent several years making Nin Bimash II into the perfect boat, I came across a boat for sale that I could not walk away from. Now I know that many of you have gotten to know my daughter Gracie through my postings here and through last winters Mainsheet article. now 10 she continues to hone her sailing skills. now able to start the honda on the C25 she has been skippering in light wind dock to dock. taking the boat out and sailing with authority. the boat, a 1968 Columbia 22 is a real gem. we will make it a project boat and in a few years I expect that Liz and Grace will join on short trips in the neebish and St. Joseph's Island area. I'll keep all posted on progress as we restore this lovely boat.
John V. Nin Bimash II Neebish Island, MI 77 C25 sk/sr #153
Well, I knew new sailors were growing up somewhere... You've got a gem, John! As for her boat, we want pics--before, during, during, during, and after!
That's the boat Frank. Thanks for the pic. Shooting through the fence like that it looks as though had to sneak to take the picture. I have a few pics of the 22 on her trailer, but still being in the north channel I have a poor internet connection so I'll wait till we are back in Ohio to post a few. The girls want to name her Gentian after my late mother's favorite flower. They are very kind and thoughtful to dedicate my gift to them to my mom. "a sailor's sailor" Nin Bimash II comes out of the water after 6 weeks in lake superior and in the north channel. We certainly had some wonderful sails, and a few scarry moments when the motor was swamped in 6 ft seas and we had to ufurl the jib and sail on a different course while the faithful Honda caught her breath. I'm working on an article about sailing around Isle Royal National Park. I'm looking for a publisher with a few bucks, who knows if I keep writing these little essays I may have enough for a book in a few years. Wish us luck pulling the girl out of the water, she really doesn't like to go home.
here's an update: Though this is not a catalina those of you who have followed Gracie will be interested. This will link you to the progress on the Liz and Gracie's Columbia 22.
John, you're in for a real treat when you and your family start sailing that Columbia 22. I rented one while in San Diego last week ... it was a lot of fun to sail (so was San Diego harbor, a lot of fun too).
I'm not about to give up my C25, but I'll be glad to crew for my girls since it will ultimately me their boat. They are doing some of the work but for me the fun is in the restoration.
John, you've just been added to my short list of heroes!!
I'm trying to get my 10 year old daughter Katie hooked on sailing, but so far she's still a "dabbler"-- she enjoys everything, fears nothing, and isn't passionate about anything. We don't push her to do anything (except homework), but I confess to "strongly encouraging" her interest in sailing. If only I could turn Katie's heart toward boats and the sea, then maybe I could convince my wife to sell the house, sell the cars, sell the pets, buy that blue water boat, hoist anchor and......
Well, anyway, congratulations John. I think you're doing a wonderful thing for Gracie, and for you & Liz.
Gracie is fearless like that and loves to do anything Dad does. When she was three I was fooling around with formula V race cars and had trouble with the starter. Grace was on her side crawling on the garage floor with me as I pulled the old starter to take in for bench testing. When we arrived at NAPA and the clerk asked what we needed, before I could open my mouth the quarter pint kid is saying so clearly "we need to test this starter..." she is just like that. she loves ski racing and is a young USSA racer, and for a while the fastest 9 year old in Ohio. Seconds ahead of her age group in one race last year she finished in the middle of the collegiate women. As for getting Katie into sailing, kids like special time, unique time with parents. Grace has been cruising with my older daughter Liz and me since she was five. When Liz started needing summer school and also was a teen needing to be in constant phone contact with friends, Grace became my crew. We did our first long cruise together when she was seven I think she just loves being with me. I know that she will grow into her teen years and probably want to do different things but since we live on an island all summer it is hard not to sail. See if the two of you can go for a little overnight, take lots of comfort food and special things to cook. Believe me, sailing with your children builds bonds that last a lifetime. Though My father passed away ten years ago I still sail with him every time I go out on the boat. every once in a while when I am smiling at a sunset sitting in the cockpit with a scotch in hand Grace will say "Thinking about Grandpa?" you bet I am...
Its great to try to inspire kids to find an interest in things other that TV. I think our two youngest grandkids (8 & 6) like sailing They are already hooked on the C250 and like to sail fast. Hope I can keep the spark going. We only have three rules so far - Life jackets required, follow orders and do it now - discussions can come later. Yes they are sailing - the motor is dragging because my shoulder and neck were aching that day.
Frank you got a couple of cuties, find a big stick for a few years down the road. That is unless you see my 4 and 7 year old boys. Right now they like the boat, but if the elder sees his friend Merris on shore with her Pokemon cards you can forget him as crew (he really is a help when it is just him and me on race day). If I could get his horse on board the younger would be in heaven.
