We just purchased a 78 Cat 25. I came with a 5 hp, 4 stroke, '99 Honda motor with almost no hours on it. Of course, after we sign the deal, the former owner mentions that on his maiden voyage, when the motor was brand new, it ran for about 45 minutes and then shut down, Started on the first pull ran a while and shut down again. I was thinking maybe as the fuel got lower he didn't have the air valve open enough or maybe the motor had some type of heat sensor. I'm about to motor for about 3 hours to get her to my marina and don't want to get stuck in the middle of the lake. Any ideas? Also how long do you think the motor will run on 3 gals of gas. light wind predicted and have about 13 miles to go. Any help appreciated.

Do you have time to take it to a dealer for service tune up ? It does sound like the tank vent was closed. I made that error once and the motors suction almost collapsed the fuel tank. Wow talk about sucktion. Have you checked all the oil levels. Last thought is a bad coil.

My Yamaha 9.9 burns 3/4 gallons an hour max. at WIDE open which is rare. I can't imagine your 5 hp. Honda would burn any more than .5 g/p/h wide open even. That's six hours. Even with that little engine you should make around 5 knots I'm guessing. You should have PLENTY of fuel, if you can keep it running...I'm betting on the fuel vent, too. Good luck.
P.S. I got a Honda 5 with my second, "project" Cat 25 SK..I am curious how yours works out. Do you have a knotmeter? I was thinking I'd have to put a larger engine on this before I sell her, but I hate to. Haven't used it yet-it's home on the trailer getting maintenance so far....Gary

Gary, I had a 5 horse evinrude on my 86 cat 25 (yeah I know, newer than the one I have now. Sold it and bought a Harley. Recently regained sanity) We were on an inland lake, but as you know Oklahoma has a tendency to whip up some pretty good wind. I never had any trouble with that size motor unless I really got caught coming straight into the storm. Thanks for the input. I figured it was the vent. We'll know by this weekend

Never fear... We had an engine problem (a cooling hose came loose) bringing our boat home from where we bought her--a 100 mile trip. We were able to get into a marina under our "auxiliary" power--the jib. Now there's something the stinkpotters can't do!

My mechanic says an outboard will be completely warm in 15 minutes, so I doubt it is a heat-related problem. 99% of outboard problems are fuel related. There may be air in the line. Use a squeeze ball to keep fuel pressure in the line and check for air leaks. If you are unsure of the outboard, borrow someone else's for the trip.

Thanks guys:

We had a successful run down the lake with no problems until we got to the dock. When I throttled down it died just as we entered the cut in the dock (20mph cross wind) luckily, I used to bring the old cat in without power all the time, did a couple of 360's to take the power out and slid into the slip with no ding's, no cracks, no errors.. Discovered later that I had not put the choke all the way in, so I guess I flooded her. Lesson learned Thanks for the help.

I have done that, too, kept the choke out the whole time. I finally used a little red hobby paint and painted the choke pin where it goes into the motor. Now I can easily see if the choke has been left out.
