OK, just as I was getting a little more comfortable after the impeller replacement (and gear oil change) on my Nissan 8hp outboard, it starts acting up again. Now I am getting only partial power. Very noticeable drop off to about 1/2 strength. This was after going through some kelp, but I don't see anything on the prop and I flushed with fresh water and am getting a good flow spitting out the top. What do you think the problem might be? Could it be fouled plugs?
Also, for those of you who do your own maintenance, what are the key steps to keep these older motors running right? I'd rather invest the 2 grand in a bigger boat than a new outboard.
I have a 4 cycle Nissan 6 on my C25, thanks to PO. A little under-powered for sure but I try not to use it. 2 weeks ago we were still 2 miles out at 830 pm and so I decided to motor in. The red warning light came on but no one was around so I kept on ... no problems. The manual says its a low oil pressure warning light but the oil is fine. I made sure it was filled with oil and it seems to be operating fine.
I'm inclined to watch the oil (which seems to be fine) and use it anyway (which as I said isn't much). It does worry me though. I don't like red warning lights. Not enough information!
In all cases outboards benefit from freshwater in the cooling system as often as possible. Bbriner, You may have a defective oil pressure switch or you may have low oil pressure. If the switch/sender is bad its just an annoyance, but would be relatively inexpensive to fix. If you actually have low oil pressure your engine will not be with you for long. You would probably be wise to get it looked at. Dave

i have the Nissan 9.8 4 stroke. When I first started using it the red light would pop on and not go off. I called the dealer and he reffered me to the factory rep. The engine light comes on if you over rev the motor. This does not have to be much. I ended up just letting it wind down before shifting from reverse to forward. This might help you.
Hey...my light is off :) The engine didn't get fried (because there is oil in there!!). I started keeping it in a vertical position. Don't know if that was it but at least the light is off. I'll get this thing checked out this winter I guess. I may see if I can trade it in for one with more power.
