Just got back from the Newport, RI International Boat Show. For those interested: Catalina 250 Water Ballast: $21,304; Catalina 250 Wing Keel: $22,196 Fin keel available, not listed, didn't ask, wanted wing. I was told the sailaway price was about $30K, plus/minus a few hundred. Sailaway price included a 'popular accessories package' which included a awlgrip finished bottom, furling main (furling jib now standard), dodger/bimini, compass, depth sounder, VHF radio, stereo, & a few other items. Didn't ask if price included trailer, presumed it did. Wife & actually I went there to look at something around 35 foot. Lightning strike me; although I love my C25, I'm tired of bonking my head belowdecks and the surgery to lower my height to the required 5'4" far exceed the cost of a 35 footer...sailaway price about $147K.
I'm with you although I want a Catalina 310 or 320. The last time I took an extended cruise on Lake Superior - 8 days in June 04, my sailing partner advised me to do two things, get a dodger, get roller furling or, get a bigger boat with all that stuff already on. Unfortunatley, at the price of even a used 310/320, I think I'll be sailing my 25T for many more years to come .
Opt for the C320...I checked them both. The 320 is bigger (more headroom) and, since they have been building them since 1994, there are more of them and therefore, much cheaper than the newer C310s. I ended up with a 1997 C320 for less money than I could have gotten any C310.
We're starting to look at bigger boat models too. Dan wants more headroom before he develops a permanent stoop. Also, more storage would be nice. We're seriously considering a C28MKkII. The Catalina dealer in Deltaville has a 2005 (although we'd buy used) we want to get aboard to see if the 6' headroom is enough for my 6'2" hubby. The price for the C320 is more then I'm willing to spend. The C28 might be a great option especially since we don't care about refrigeration or a roller furling main. Hot water is luxury enough!
Re headroom. I did not check the C27 or C28, but at 6'1", the smallest Catalina in which I could stand up straight was the C320. The C30 and C310 did not have enough headroom. One if my requirements for the next boat (when looking this spring) was the ability to stand up straight. The C320 fit the bill...bought a 1997. I just checked www.yachtworld.com and there are some high dollar C28s there...for a little more money, you can get a lot more boat.
