I am quite excited. Yellow Fin Tuna are consistently biting only 10 to 20 miles out. People are getting limits of 10 to 20 pounders by 9 AM on trolling gear. I am all packed, loaded with the heavy fishing gear, and will be up at 4:30 AM tomorrow and plan to be out of Mission Bay by 5 AM headed to 32 36 N 117 24 W followed by 32 24 117 24 (around here we would call that position 24/24 or on the radio "24 over 24" with the minutes of the 32 north lattitude first followed by the minutes of 117 W longitude). I'll stay in US waters, but these points are just along the funny Mexican offshore border that hangs a right off the beach and runs way north into what should be Californian waters.

So I'll be heading to the North 9 mile bank followed by a course towards the south end of the bank, then the 302, stopping short of the border. For me, this is mostly a SSW course (about 210 mag).

Good weather forecast afternoon winds to 10 knots, seas 2 feet W at 13 seconds and 2 feet S at 13 seconds. Air temp 75, sea about 70 F on the bank.

Planning to motor out before dawn, should be a nice broad reach back with the 155 poled out riding the afternoon westerly. Hopefully with a cooler full of tuna! Expect to be back around 5 PM after a 12 hour day on the water.

Digital cam is packed, if I get into the meat a photo is all the most of you are likey to get!

Yeah, I've been waiting since April (when the tuna showed 100 miles south) for this!

Good luck Jim. Sounds like a good time even if nothing is caught. Can't go wrong with that.

Good luck, Jim! Sounds like a great time.

Here in Oklahoma, my son and I are leaving this afternoon to do a little fishing before sailing the last regatta of the season tomorrow afternoon. However, tomorrow morning is an hour and a half motor up the lake to the race venue, so we plan to troll for sand bass on the way.

Mmmm, good eats, but not as good as fresh tuna. ;-)

Hey Jim,
Good luck.
Did you know the difference between good fishing, and great fishing? Great fishing is when you actually catch something.

Could you explain to me why you are trying to keep away from the Mexican border offshore? If I had to guesse, it's all because of governmental BS. but enlighten us of the politics of it anyways.

Do you single hand and fish, or do you have a fishing buddy?

Mexican fishing requires a Mexican boat permit $75 plus a mexican license for everyone on board $35 plus you are required to check into the US Customs dock in San Diego Bay on returning from Mexican waters which, for me, would be a 4 to 5 hour side trip on my way home. I am planning to stay in US waters or at least close.

Most San Diego locals do not check in unless Customs flags them down on the water, but they are breaking a law with stiff fines.

I'll be single handing. I've learned to heave to when pulling on a fish. Heave to and have the autopilot steer the course so the boat is heading away from the fish. If you get a double or even triple hookup (its happened) good luck, get them in fast!

Check out www.sandiegofishing.com they have a forum like this one (I am also jimB517 over there)

Wow, sailing and fishing too. More fun than a man is allowed.

Is it true that you can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish?

Gary and I had a great day on the water. Up at 5, we were well outside the Mission Bay jetty by 5:45. It was pitch dark. I got my first hook up of the day, a lobster trap line firmly around the prop - killing the motor. I had to gaff it, and cut the line. No wind, drigting towards the channel marker, I finally got the rest of the rope off. Thank goodness, no damage.

By 7:30 I was in 375 feet of water and about 5 or 6 miles out, pulling in my first yellow tail of the day. He hit a cedar plug on a small paddy. Too bad, he was also my only fish of the day!

Gary and I made it to the 9 miloe bank. The US Navy was having an exercise out there, as were numerous Pacific Gray whales. They were swimiing in a circle and rounding up what appeared to be krill. It was awesome.

To avoid the Navy carrier, we took a tack which was essentially heading us home. We were 15 miles out. I worked many paddys on the way in but no one home. The biggest problem was that we got back too early, so we sailed some more up to La Jolla. Gary lost a cushion and I hooked up a lot of kelp.

In by about 3 PM, I was home by 6:30 for grilled yellowtail, stir fried veggies with pad thai noodles. Delicious.

40 mile day, 8 hours on the water, 1/2 gallon of gas (or less)! One of the best days ever!

Pictures will be posted maybe tomorrow.

Wow, Jim. What a great day.
When I head down to the Keys for annual pilgrimage in February I'm thinking of trolling the weedlines in the Gulf for Dolphin. (the fish kind, or Mahi Mahi, not the Flipper the Porpise kind)
I have never fished off my boat. I really don't want fish gut smell on the boat as I have to sleep on it.

Here's a tip. Put a shot of rum in the fishes gills when you land it. It kills them very quickly and doesn't get blood and guts all over. Then they go into a cooler on ice. I clean them later off the boat.
