My water tank deck fill doesn't work since there is NO water tank vent...no where for the air to go. I have to fill the tank from inside the cabin.

I've got both a fill and a water vent fitting on my deck.

Question: The water tank doesn't have a connection for the vent. Where is this vent supposed to connect on the tank? Is it part of the tank cap? The only connection on the top of the tank is for the fill hose; no vent nipple exists.

Question: Once I make a vent connection on the water tank, should I run it to my deck vent? Wouldn't I get sea water intrusion, bugs, and other unwanted items entering the water supply?

Albert: I'm not sure where my tank vent is connected, but one reason for running the vent to the deck fitting is that if you completely fill the tank, water comes out of the vent. If your vent is below, how will you know, and where will it go? I haven't seen signs of any intruders...

My C25 is a '78. There is no deck vent. The only vent is a small hole in the cap on water tank. When filling, I take the starboard cushion and seat board off to expose the tank cap. While filling from the deck fitting, I can look down through the window and watch for the water to come up to the open cap.

On my '82 FK/SR there is no deck vent for the fresh water tank. I found the vent hose was just run up behind the fiberglass seat back on the starboard settee. The fitting on the top of the tank is for the vent. On the outboard side, in the top sternmost corner is the inlet fitting. And, of course, the bottom stern end is the outlet fitting. Does your tank have that inlet fitting that just didn't get connected?

John,

I've got the inlet fitting attached exactly as yours. The fitting on top of my tank is a solid screw on cap with no vent nor fittings attached. I was planning to put a hose nipple on the cap and attach a vent line to it. I just don't know where to put the other end of the line. I don't think my deck vent would be a good idea due to the risk of salt water intrusion. Ideally, I'd run it to the head area sink: no salt water intrusion and any overflow would drain out. I just need to make sure that soap and/or dirty wash water doesn't drain back

BTW, I see that you have a T-fitting on your vent cap. Where does the other line go?

How do you prevent water overflow from draining behind the fiberglass?

I'm concerned with saltwater intrusion if I attach to the deck vent. The advantage of the deck vent is as you've pointed out--overflow will spill outside of cabin.

Its a Catch-22, vent to deck--saltwater intrusion; vent inside overflow behind the fiberglass.

Burying the rail a little, Albert? Actually, I suspect the vent won't let much in for the same reason an unvented tank won't let much in the regular fill pipe--no place for the air to go as long as the fill pipe is closed (unless you're pumping into the sink while you have the rail buried). Anyway, a few drops won't hurt you, the plumbing, or your dishes...

Albert,
My vent line originally went up the seat back as I described before. I was concerned that the water would drain out if the boat heeled too much, so I ran the line into the compartment under the head sink and made a big loop in it that I mounted with a zip tie as high on the bulkhead as I could. I figured that would be good enough, I'd have to roll the boat to get it to leak.

The line off the T-fitting goes to a gauge I made so I can see how full the tank is. Without a deck vent I never knew if I was filling the tank all the way before heading out. And even if I had a deck vent I wouldn't be able to tell when I was going to run out. It's not elegant, but it's functional. Here's what I did:
-----------------------------
I bought two T fittings and two L fittings, ten hose clamps and four feet of tubing, cut the vent tube and the outlet tube and put the T fittings in.

Then I drilled holes and, with the two L fittings, ran a length of tube up the lower side of the starboard settee. Then I filled the tank one gallon at a time marking the increments with automobile striping tape. The red tape is at the 5 gallon intervals.
