hi everyone, my slip on the chesapeake is around $2500 a year, do any of you know of a less expensive one anywhere from North of Annapolis to Chesapeake Beach. i'm looking to move soon to save some $$$
Steve, I am slipped a little further South then Cheasapeake at Flag Harbor. It's a private condominum owners association and we rent from one of the owners that has a slip there. We are paying 1500/yr and it depends on each owner as to how much. I think the price will be going upwards to 1600 for next year. This price inculdes use of the facilities: showers/bathroom. There is a swimming pool that is located on site for $5.00 per family person for the season and also you have access to buy a beach pass for Long Beach for $4.00 per slip owner/renter. There is a web site at www.flagharbor.com with all the boat yard particulars. We had our boat at Whitehall Yacht Yard which is located in Annapolis, just south of the bay bridge on the north side of Hacketts Point.(the three radio towers you see in Annapolis Harbor). We were paying 1800/yr there but not much amenities. Also going out of Whitehall Creek into the bay was not much fun as all of the boat (lots of power boats) traffic galore was comming at you was a little unerving at times. We looked at Herrington Harbour N and S and found it to be a little $$ plus a long channel out to the bay from HHN. Check the charts and you will see mostly four foot depths in the mid bay area. Our slip now is located of of Rt4 in St. Lenord, MD. About 10 minutes N of Solomon's Island. It's about 18 miles by water around Drum Point to Zanheiser's and the rest of Solomon's.
After I lost my slip (and subsuquently my boat) at Herrington Harbor North from Isabel, I moved to HHS. It was only slightly more than HHN, but I sure don't miss motoring up and down the channel! You can just get out of the marina and get up the sails...that's like 10-15 minutes from dropping the lines to sails up. While I liked having the Yard services at HHN, HHS is pretty sweet to this point in my first year there.
I think I'm paying $2600, but it might be a little less than that. It's a 30 ft slip, but they do have smaller ones as well. To be honest, we were gonna look around to save a few bucks, but just not having to motor anywhere other than in/out of the marina made us decide to stay there. It so nice to be able to cut the motor and sail....
Wow. I'm even more thankful to be in Urbanna (VA). $ 960/year, with water and power at the dock, showers, toilet, shop, travelift and sailmaker 50 feet away; restaurants, hardware store, shops, grocery, laundromat, ice cream shop all within walking distance; public pool in town; wonderful swimming beach at the mouth of the creek.
You are lucky Brooke, but unfortunately, I don't live down there. I guess a marina will charge what they think the market will stand...Herring Bay is certainly cheaper than Annapolis though (it's also the shortest drive for me, which is pretty important too.) HHN used to be more reasonable, but they lost something like 150 small to medium slips last year in the storm and replaced them with 40 to 60 foot slips, which aren't very reasonably priced for boats in our size. Even the smaller marinas in the area can be pretty pricey. I was at one called Paradise Marina, which is kind of across from HHN, but they have a lot of long time slip holders that were there before the current owners, and it's reasonable still for them, but when a alip opens up, they charge the new folks an arma and a leg. Ahhh...the joys of sailing...which brings me back to why I like HHS, less motoring, more sailing!
Kirk, that's what I like about Flag Harbor. I motor out of my slip and through maybe a 100 yard channel and pull up the motor and am sailing. Makes for more time in the .
Kirk, I "bragged" about Urbanna as a price point of reference for Steve and others. I can't imagine paying those kind of prices. So, not only am I lucky, I'm blessed.
I'm still at HHN where my slip is just under $2000 a year. I'm not sure how long the wait list is - I have noticed some new dockmates on the dock before, after and ours this year. It's $100 (refundable)to get on the list and you know in mid April if you have a slip.
