I'm excited to announce a third place finish by Antares and me (singlehanded) in our first race entry. First place was taken by a J/80 and second place went to a J/30. We finished approximately 500 seconds behind the J/80.

Windward/Leeward three times on a one mile course. 10 knot ENE winds under threatening skies, but a nice 75 muggy Oklahoma degrees.

I'm also excited to announce that I sailed into my slip Friday night. A nerve racking experience for a novice, to say the least.

I hope everyone else had as enjoyable a weekend as I did!

You were singlehanding on a windward/leeward course against crewed boats ?

If so, you deserve a double pat on the back for placing that well, there's a lot of stuff to keep track of when singlehanding. Sailing singlehanded into a slip is no mean feat either.

Good form JB!
I thought the weather on Tenkiller was going to be too nasty this weekend so I went to work instead. Bad Move!
I think a singlehanded regatta (I know thats not what you were in) would be a blast. I don't think I'd know what to do with a competent crew anyway. Shoot I think just seeing another sailboat on the lake would be a blast!
Kinda sad.

Congratulations J.B. - wonderful achievement!
Was the 500 sec delta on corrected time? or elapsed time? The J/80 should have owed you about 108 secs/mile and the J/30 about 90. (I assume you were racing PHRF).

The 500 seconds were on corrected time. [Edit: No, the 500 seconds had to be elapsed time. After the race, I asked for the corrected time delay, and was told 500 seconds. However, I remember watching my chronometer at the end, and I know for certain that I finished around ten minutes after the J/80. Also, the time I gave up at the start was no more than somewhere between five and ten minutes.] Three of the most seasoned racers were protecting the gate, and I was afraid of the start; first start as Skipper, singlehanded and 155%. So, I thought that I'd do the old America's Cup start (i.e., sail away from the line for approximately half the sequence), but I miscalculated the distance for one and ended up miscalculating my tack for another. Therefore, I had to tack in order to make the pin. By that point, I'm sure that I'd given up more than the 500 seconds at the start.

Antares loves to sail close hauled, and once I get her trimmed she really stands up and flies. Downwind, however, she's like sailing a log. So, I made up considerable time on each upwind leg and maybe stayed even with each downwind leg. Quite frankly, the only reason that I placed is because the third seasoned racer had an extremely bad day, and I was fortunate enough not to make any mistakes after the start. We never did find out exactly what was going on with the Evelyn 32, because they sailed home right after the finish and didn't attend the after race festivities. However, his wife was crewing for him instead of his normal crew, and she didn't seem to be enjoying herself very much.

Anyway, I learned a lot and had a great time. Maybe next time, I'll even take my seven burgees down and turn off the stereo. ;-)

Great idea, Dave, except adding a Magna would require relocation of the beer tap.

Hi Charlie,

Too right about the forecast, but unfortunately my ten year old has placed me on shore leave. Hopefully it'll hold out through next weekend, because the leaves were just beginning to turn last week. I wonder if you can you buy Scotch in kegs?

It was a beautiful weekend but alas I had to work again saturday.
Got out yesterday for a couple of hours, great 8-10 knts from the south, perfect for a long beam reach on Tenkiller. A little overcast but otherwise a perfect sail. Just wish I'd gotten out earlier.
Did see something unusual, a 35-40' cabin cruiser probably 30 feet off the bank with just a couple of feet of the bow and 3 feet of the pilot house sticking out of the water. Looks like he started taking on water as was trying to beach it before she went all the way under. There was a older 40' Chris Craft missing from the marina yesterday and I'm hoping its not her. Even though a stink pot she's a beautiful boat.

Oh and by the way, scotch is my mid winter drink, now if you could come up with a keg of Tequila....

Update on the sunken boat,
Its a 47' Wooden Chris Craft. Don't know a lot of specifics but it did have alot of dry rot and several small holes in the hull. Don't know why it was even in the water but the insurance company is going to have it raised because they expect foul play. Don't know why someone trying to sink a boat would try and beach it to keep it from going down but I don't work for the insurance company either.
By the way JB the 40'er I mentioned before was shipped to Grand in the past week or two. She was called "North Forty" but don't know if she still is or not.

Yikes, $9,000! Although I was just joking, I'd never considered the possible cost. I guess it would probably be less expensive to just sail Antares over to Scotland and procure (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) a barrel directly. Of course, once there, I'm not likely to want leave again anyway.

Sincerely,

John Paul Jones

That's better than having them run off for allegedly usurping the throne.

Scottish history buffs that realize the inconsistency in that statement can EM me for an explanation. Further the affiant say not.
