Its raining today in San Diego. I took a little time off from studying, here are some additional photos from the summer vacation cruise taken by Charlie Roberts (Sterngucker)

Look on the bright side, at least your location isn't buried under many feet of snow in winter and blasted with sub-zero temperatures like some parts of the country will be within a few weeks. Does your boat stay in a slip year round, or do you haul out to dry storage in the winter? I don't know about Humboldt Bay, but San Francisco Bay has some great sailing between now and next Spring (at least on days that it's not raining). My sailing club moves it's cruises down to the Bay each year from November to March, and I have had some wonderful weekends of sailing even in January and February. For some reason known only to meteorologists, the San Francisco Bay area is often relatively warm and sunny on winter days when the central Valley (Sacramento), is socked in with tule fog and 25ºF colder then the daytime high out at the coast.
Jim - looking at this photo of Indiscipline from your Catalina cruise, I have to say: you don't have enough fishing poles rigged out!
I can troll a 3 line spread, theres another rigged and ready to throw lures at kelp patties, and I also have a VHF antenna mounted on the stern rail (kinked the cable to the top of the mast during my first mast raising). There are 2 other small rigs down below for bait fishing or just sitting and fishing off the stern when at anchor/moored.
Also visible on the stern rail - my dinghy outboard, bait table, 18 inch net, and throwable life preserver.
We were motorsailing in air just light enough on the beam to keep the genny rolled out, making about 5.5 knots at the time and chasing dolphins.
Its rare to have pictures of Indiscipline III, usually I am the one with the camera!
"Look on the bright side, at least your location isn't buried under many feet of snow in winter"
Yes, that is the bright side... however, the older I get the more I long for warm winds and waters... We've only had 2 mild Pacific storm systems come through here so far and already I'm weary of it!
I'm looking forward to spending November-April cruising in the Sea of Cortez and the summers up in the San Juans... all this begining in about 1800 days.
I have heard that the truly strange weathers in San Francisco Bay are a result of the climate in the desert in the middle of California (due east of SF). In the summer, the desert gets scorching hot, the air there rises, and sucks in air from the ocean. This causes a huge wind over the low point from the ocean to the desert, which happens to be through the Golden Gate Bridge and right through the Bay. In the winter, the desert isn't very hot and this effect doesn't occur, so the normally warm California temperatures prevail.
I only learned this after freezing my ass off many times while sailing in SF Bay in the summer. Now in live in Southern California so it's nice all the time...
Lee - I hope you join us on our Fleet cruise next summer. I am thinking of San Diego - Catalina - Santa Cruz Island, another 3 week trip, with longer blue water legs this time. Join us for any part you like! Also possible - San Diego - Coral Marina in Ensenada, day sail and explore Baja coast/islands.
