I have looked into tackling the stem fitting upgrade but do not want the integrated bow roller as I'm going to install a separate one. Has anybody attempted to fit a piece of stainless steel to the existing stem fitting in order to extend it down the bow and bolt it through?

Thanks

You can order the new style stemhead without the bow roller. I would think you'd have to remove the old stemhead in order to do a proper job of welding on a new piece and, as you may know, stainless shrinks to some degree when welded . . . I'd opt for a new one from Catalina.

Steve

When I spoke to Catalina Direct last year around this time I was told that it was not available without the bow roller. Do I need to go to Catalina Yachts instead?

Thanks

I see . . . thanks for the update . . . I would check with Catalina Direct. BTW, if you're going to install a bow roller any way, the Catalina unit is pretty nice.

Steve

I just purchased a 25# CQR and assumed I would need a much beefier setup than the one pictured in the Catalina Direct Manual as I intend to keep the anchor secured outside the existing locker. Of course with a '79 C25 I'll have to notch the lid for the rode and possibly increase the size of the drain. But that's another thread....

Thanks for the feedback

Tim,

Here's a photo of the Catalina upgrade stem fitting with anchor roller:

Note that the 22# Claw and 20# Danforth are both one size larger than recommended by their manufacturers for 25' sailboats. The Claw just fits on the roller forward of the anchor locker hatch. I drilled a hole in the Claw for the captive retaining pin. The Danforth has 20' of 3/16" chain and 3/8" double braid, the Claw has 30' of 1/4" chain and 1/2" 3-strand (will replace with 7/16" double braid someday). The hatch cover and lip have been notched for both chains. The locker drain has been enlarged to 1/2"SCH40PVC. The anchor locker has been completely sealed off from the nav lights and cabin.
