There are a bunch of us folks that either own Catalinas or have "graduated" from one in the north sound-but we usually head north and west in the summer throughout the San Juans and Gulf Islands-and even to Desolation Sound!
With our "great economy" that our wonderful president is pushing down our thoats, it should be a quiet summer in the islands with less crowds-as the folks in the larger vessels just aren't traveling due to the expense of fuel, dock space, and loss of jobs.
Im game for a get together. The rest of you might want to join us on the anual ODYSSEY cruise June 1st. I posted it previously but perhaps it was a bit early. Dockton on Vashion is a good spot for a cruise. Blake island is another.
KEN I think you are right about the traffic in SanJuans and Gulf Islands this year, The Portland fleet is down to 4 boats from the normal 8 already, presently we are planning to be in the area the last 2 weeks of July. Also If anyone is contemplating a trip on the ODESSY you better do it, its a wonderful ship and the history is very interesting and for sure crew and Doug will make the trip very worthwhile. Terry "LEMATIKE"
The Odyssey cruise was a great time last year! Looks like too many family commitments this year to make it. But do plan to spend as much time as possible on the Sound this year.
First the easy part- Where? Dockton (Vashon Island) has docks and basic on shore facilities. Blake is fun but can be crowded. Brownsville usually has dock space. They dock there is big enough to have picnic tables next to the boat. Poulsbo or Gig Harbor? This will be much easier than the when. Any ideas?
Well my vote is for Docton. Its a good day for you in Olympia to make it there. Gig Harbor is crowded and the public dock is imposable. Blake gets very full and if your on the outside the roll from the satate ferry system is bad. Dockton has a picknic shelter nice bathrooms and showers as well as a small park like area near the ramp. We could also come south to your area. Penrose point is beautifull and has a campground and picknic areas as well as a small trail and small dock. the dock is hard to get to at low tide but the morrings are good and good holding for anchoring. Beware of the spit / sand bar that dries out at low tide.
Doug - the first mate and I are planning to tow our boat to Puget Sound around June 9th and would be interested in meeting up with other Catalina folks.
Doug what time of the year will you be making the trip over ??? Let us all know so we can provide you with more information and also try to get together.
I'll also be trailering to San Juans from Ontario, OR (close to Boise, ID) last week of July first week of August. That is if I can ever get my Cat back together.
I purchased this 84 Trad/Std swing, sight unseen out of Florida and had it shipped to Oregon (I know, I know, never purchase a boat sight unseen)last October. It was sitting neglected for two years after the DPO cruised the intercoastal and went offshore to Cuba. But I got it cheap and it included an new Yamaha 9.9, New North sails, a new West Marine inflatable with 2.2 Merc., Autohelm 1000, CDI furling, 4 anchors, Bimini, lines run aft, and a servicable but rusty trailer.
I'm in the process of restoring all the teak, rebuilding the sliding hatch, replacing the motor mount after filling in about a dozen holes from the old mount, (the one from Catalina Direct has 17 1/2 inches of travel), rebuilding the mast step, reinstalling the bow pulpit which was removed for shipping, filling the hole (1 1/2" X 6") in the transom where the DPO removed the control arm for the former wheel steering but simply screwed a board over to repair, and on and on and on. Hope to be on the water by mid May. Look forward to seeing other Cat owners in McCall or Cascade ID.
Anyone heading into Washington be sure to keep us locals posted. Many of us will be in the area and are willing to help. If you want info or get into a jam just give us a shout.
Ditto if you are planning a trip to the San Juans and Gulf Islands!
Let me know If I can be any help in securing moorage, etc.especially in the Anacortes area-the gateway to the San Juans.
We will be heading out ourselves the end of May and plan to venture to Princess Louisa and Desolation Sound and beyond for a month-yeah someone has to do the dirty deed-might as well be us!!
Encore! usually trailers from the Columbia River to the San Juans in June. No plans in concrete yet. Keep letting folks know what plans are. It would be fun to meet up. S. Sound or C. Sound is new to me; might be interested, but I won't ramp launch in salt. Any affordable lifts from Oly to Tacoma area? Gary
We are planing to leave out of Bellingham August 10 and return August 24. We will be going to Canada to met up with another boat and spend most of our time in Canada.
The lift at Swantown Marina in Oly is about $90 one-way . So my brother had a great idea: we're trailering it up to Anacortes May 2nd (we're hoping the rates are still low up there. Ken?) and sailing it back to Olympia for our first excursion of the year.
If you want to ramp launch there are several fresh water ramps you can use on Lake Union or Lake Washington. Head west through the locks and out into the Sound. Its the thrill of a life time going through the locks and its a breez to do. Once you have done it once its OK. Just dont do it on a vacation weekend like 4 July. There is a list of bars and resturants accessable by water on both the sound and the lakes. Once through the locks its a streight shot to Blake Island with its salmon dinner and Indian show. Camping on shore is allowed and there are trails to hike. From there you can go north to Eagle Harbor or Kingston or on to Port Townsend via the Townsend cannal. You can also turn south to Vashion Island, Docton, Gig Harbor or Tacoma. Enter the South Sound Via the Tacoma Narrows and its a who new world. Some of the smaller towns have thier own salmon bakes or flea markets and saturday farmers markets. Let us know where and when and we will try to meet you.
Hi Douglas, The stopping point for Friday (May 3) is up in the air at this point. Depending on the weather, we might duck in behind Whidbey or end up on the Port Townsend side Friday night (May 3), then Saturday night we'll be near Manzanita, north of the Southworth ferry terminal, directly across from Blake Island (my aunt and uncle have a mooring buoy). If you are in that area Saturday, it'd be great to meet up. Then Sunday, shoot through the Narrows and back to Oly. A short trip this time.
John, the rates are still low at Cap Sante Marine, as well as the daily rates at Cap Sante Marina (which is county owned), Got some new eats in town, but nothing beats the bowling alley for food, especially the fish and chips, or the four egg omellette that is served in the mornings!
For those going into Canada, be prepared to wait in line for documation, and be sure that your boat has all the papers needed for ownership, registration, etc. as well as you with a valid passport or an original birth certificate. Drivers licence only tell the Canadian folks that you can drive, but they have no proof on who you really are!!
Hi all you Puget Sounders! I'm new to the group and live in Seattle and my C25 is moored on Lake Union. Dockton is a good choice, agree with everyone else about Blake, great place but crowded all the time it seems. Glad to be a part of the C25 forum!
Douglas - our current plan is to head over to the Puget Sound area on Labor Day weekend. We were going to go over in June but we have a daughter moving to Portland and will help her move in Sept. Not sure where we will launch but the Olympia area is a short trip from Portland so we will likely start there and head north.
