For those of you that charter in the BVI....this will be our third trip down to the BVI this March and we are considering going to Anegada this trip. My question is this, is the trip to Anegada worth arranging our schedules around? (we are required to go with a Sunsail babysitter to Anegada) In the past we have not gone out to Anegada but feel we might be missing something out there. Also, is it worth staying two nights so we have time to explore/snorkle? Anyone else going mid-March?
First, I'm green with envy! We went to Anegada three years ago during a Moorings charter with some friends. They had bareboated over two dozen times in the BVI and were familiar enough for us to go it on our own. If you've never been there, I'd HIGHLY recommend a 'babysitter,' as you put it. The entry into the lagoon through the reefs is pretty tricky and not very clearly marked. Make sure you have plenty of daylight to pick your way through.
As for the bigger question as to whether or not it's worth the trip. . . a definite maybe. The long run to the island was fantastic. By far the best sailing of our nearly two weeks in the islands. Also, one of the very best meals we had during our trip was at 'Neptune's Treasure' on Anegada. The flamingo ponds were neat and the snorkeling was good. Staying two nights. . . probably not worth it; just my opinion. Whether or not it's worth the trip out there at all. . . I'd say if you have more than a week in the islands, it would be worth it. If you're pressed for time, it's not so great that I'd classify it as a 'must see.' It's pretty much a full day there and another day back to Virgin Gorda or the south side of Tortola. If I only had five or six days I would rather spend the time around North Sound or Spanish Town.
Again, just my opinion. . . you know you'll have a GREAT time there where ever you end up! Enjoy!
Bren, Thanks...that's the thing, about only having 7 days, you can't do everything on the list so some things wait til next year. Sunsail says you have to be in the North Sound Tuesday night for a Wednesday trip out to Anegada. That ends up dictating the whole weeks schedule. In the past we have stayed one night at Spanish Town mid-week so we could take "real" showers and re-provision at the little market. I guess we will have to leave it up to the crew.
