Today was one of those 'payback days' for living in central Texas during the blazing heat of summer. November 6th and it's 75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and a perfect 10 knots on the beam for the length of Canyon Lake! No jet skis, very few power boats and literally about 75 sailboats (mostly Hobies and Laser types) enjoying their races.

The kids and I had probably the BEST sailing day of the year. . .

What are the kids watching? (The little dot just touching the life line to the left)

A deer, casually out for an Autumn swim!!

At first, from a distance, I thought it was just a duck floating around. As we went up this finger off of the main body of the lake I realized that it was a DEER crossing from one side to the other! It casually swam approx 400 yards across the water (about 75 deep in the middle) then climbed out and bolted into the woods. What a day!

Oscar, is that the deer or our sons? You're right, it's a constant battle to get BOTH of the straps snapped; at least he has ONE snapped today!

In regard to the deer. . . actually, they may be smarter than we give them credit for. Today happens to be the opening of deer season here!

It's like the guys that wear a helmet on a motorcycle 'caus it's the law...but they won't fasten the chin strap.

Oscar: I sailed Canyon Lake for 5 years but never saw anything like this before. It's a really long hike to the other side over bad terrain. Maybe the deer decided it would be easier to swim across.

Bren: Glad you had a great day, but I echo Oscar's caution about unfastened life jackets on your son.

He was probably rethinking that decision as the big white thing was approaching!

Texas P&W was hosting handicapped hunters last weekend in the Canyon Park area. I guess lots of hunters+limited cover=swim for Bambi.
