Over 1000 documented shipwrecks. The local coasties call themselves the "Guardians of the Graveyard." There's a few ingredients there that make for a volatile situation. The Gulf Stream is right up to the coast, hot water moving NE at several knots, this mixes with cold water coming south, the Labrador current. If you then also have a North Easterly wind opposing the current, and a cold fall/winter day, with all this turbulent multi temperature water on top of a shoal that extends ten miles off shore......you get the idea. The area makes it's own private localized storms. Thirty foot breaking waves are not unheard of.....the day we snuck by the monster was asleep, and we tiptoed....
Great story and very well written!! If you need crew for the return trip, just let me know.
Over the same time frame we chartered a Gemini 105 catamaran out of Key West. Plenty of fun sailing up and down the chain of keys but, all in all, amazingly similar to gunkholing in the Chesapeake. We did, however, have great weather: Sunny and mid 80s in the day and mid 70s at night.
