The sheave that my centerboard line goes over has taken some serious abuse and needs replacing. It must have jammed and the line has cut grooves into it hauling the ceterboard up. Anyone ever replaced one of these and know where to get one? Catalina Direct was unable to help on this.

Thanks, Max

Puzzled, what sheave are you speaking of? There is one down the black tube that the line runs thru which exits the boat and attaches to the board. If it is that one, I had it replaced and got the part from Catalina HQ in CA. While your at it ask for the "new" updated CB line. It is no longer made of metal. Suppose to eliminate the chance of snapping.

Suzie,

Hmmm ... the sheave I'm referring to (at least on my boat) is a roller underneath the system the mainsheet attaches to in the cockpit. You don't have this?

So far my standard metal line had been working fine and I've taken the attitude of "If it's not broken, don't fix it". It has been hard to pull up the centerboard, though, so a future project is to add a swivel to the lower pulley as mentioned previously in the forum and eliminate the twisting and binding. I think this is behind the destruction of the sheave, since I really have to put my weight into hauling the centerboard up.

Max

Max, You should be able to remove that sheave and take it to West Marine or a local dealer. Everything I have needed so far I have been able to match locally.

Good idea. The sheave is off and at home and there's the opportunity to visit West Marine next week. I have looked around in the store, but didn't see anything on the shelf. They're usually pretty good about ordering things, though. The only problem with visiting West Marine is having the discipline to not buy anything else! I had previously checked with my local Catalina dealer, but he didn't have anything, nor could he find anything in his various parts catalogs.

Max;
This is a long shot, but, last winter I found flat spots in the turning blocks for the jib sheets. The manufacturer of the blocks wasn't marked but all of the other equipment on the boat is Garhauer, and is waranteed for 10 years. I called them and they said to send them the blocks, two weeks later I had new sheeves. I have no idea who made the block that your having trouble with but if its Garhauer, I'm sure they will provide you with a replacement sheeve at no cost.

Max, Next year get a hard copy of Wesst Marine's catalog, sometimes
I have found the on-line version not as clear as the paper version.
Also, WM ships at no cost if the item is not in the store.

Max...the block your talking about gave me problems many years ago. It is a brass or bronse block but it is plated with nickel. Nickle is a notoriously poor bearing surface and the combination of the compression of the block straps and the plating caused the block to drag...and in your case to seize.

I removed the sheave from the block and filed of the plating down to bare brass and it has done much better. Of course, your fix is to replace the block as the sheave is damaged.
