A couple of shots of my keel damage: This side shows the missing lead, though not that well. The other side has more damage to the fiberglass encapsulation. Lots of cracks! Lots more cracks!
Going to be interesting learning how to fix all of this.
You had me going there for a second--I was thinking "that isn't like any C-25 keel I've seen..."
Those cracks suggest some severe flexing of the hull where the keel is mounted. It might require dropping the keel in order to reinforce the structure. That's probably a job for a pro--your insurance should take care of most of it. If you want something to do, you could work on the wound at the bottom.
Sure thing, but it will have to wait until next weekend as I can't go to the boat during daylight hours during the week.
Dave, How would I determine that the keel needs to be dropped and structure reinforced? There is an eight inch crack about a 2 feet back from the rear of the keel and perpendicular to the keel, however the keel bolts look solid and are tight and I don't see a lot of new stress indication around the keel bolts. I've had the whole floor up looking.
As to insurance. A) I didn't do this, it was the PO, and B) I only have liability on the thing so they wouldn't be paying out anything anyway. I knew she needed a lot of work when I bought her. Going to give Don Casey's books a run for the money ;)
A pal of mine had a Dufour 24, struck hard on fwd tip of keel exactly as shown in your picture. The hull buckled aft of the keel and that boat had an elaborate inner liner which deformed and clearly showed that the after end of the keel attempted to rotate up into the boat, just as your crack would suggest. A yard reinforced the hull from the inside with mat, roving, and sort of glassed-on "rib" to reinforce the area, Pal went happily on his way with a strong boat. The crack behind and perpendicular suggests a major flex in the hull when the keel levered it up. The smaller (I assume) cracks in your picture could be the result of sideways or fore/aft leverage. The area around the bolts is probably OK because in that reinforced area, the "stub", the bolts kept the hull tight to the top of the keel.
The problem is that if these cracks are through the hull, then the basic strength of the hull is compromised, and the next time the keel hits something, the boat could go down in a hurry. I don't know about repairing that kind of damage except to say you can't just "glue" it back together with some epoxy. Each of these cracks is in the spot that will be under the most stress the next time, so minimally the strength of the original laminations must be reconstructed. If you don't get it done professionally, you might want to at least get a professional estimate that will give you some clues as to what you need to do. Maybe it's not as bad as I'm suggesting--that would be great. But it sounds like it could be serious.
PS--Yes of course I didnt mean to suggest for a minute this was a trivial or minor repair, merely meant to point out that such things CAN be repaired and are mostly a question of labor, and access, the materials not being excruciatingly expensive, Godspeed, ron SRSK Orion SW FL
