I GOT MY APRIL ISSUE OF SAIL MAGAZINE AND THERE IS A NICE ARTICLE ON SAILING ON LAKE MEAD IN A CATALINA 250.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
I read the article a couple of days ago and I was glad to finally hear about Herb and Nancy’s trailer-sailing exploits aboard their C250. He didn’t mention much about the boat except that he was happy with the headroom and the enclosed head. Being the world travelers they are (aboard much larger vessels like their 36’ ketch “Sea Foam” and their Crealock 34 “Red Shoes”), I wonder how happy they are returning to trailer-sailing. Herb admits he’s 74 years old . . . I’m envious. I hope I am as active and still sailing when I’m his age.
The article was a bit of a downer for me. His portrayal of the low water levels on Lake Mead and the unseasonably hot weather in Arizona in mid-May DID NOT entice me to visit that area. I’m sure the area is beautiful, but hot temps (we already have that here in Austin) and high, gusty winds (we often have that, too) do not lend themselves to enjoyable sailing.
I was surprised to hear that they had to double-reef and go without the jib in winds that were “gusty, sometimes reaching 30 knots.”
I suspect this trip was mid-May last year. Maybe we’ll be treated to a retelling of other adventures they’ve had aboard their C250 as well.
