Hi sailors! Indiscipline is now rigged with hooks on the 2 reefing lines so that I can easily set the flattening reef, 1st and 2nd reefs. Yesterday, I was out in great sailing conditions - air temp around 80, gusty winds to 15+ and a great long period swell that was usually flat but once in a while a 4 to 5 footer came through. I was flying along trying to catch Jack in his Newport 41. Indiscipline was under 135 and main and heeling to 30+ in the gusts. I decided to try the flattening reef. What a change! She settled right down, lost a little speed, but remained under 15 degrees of heel. I could not catch Jack.
Ken called, and as I am going to crew with him on the Newport - Ensenada race in April, I turned back to get some time on his boat. On the way back in I had one of the best whale encounters ever. Big Pacific Grey Whale blew a spout right in front of the boat and stayed with me for several minutes. She was heading south, in about 100 feet of water and just 1 mile off the MB jetty.
The rest of the day was sailing the S2 28 footer. This a great boat, made to much higher quality than our Catalinas. Very stiff, and able to stand up to the same winds that were heeling Indiscipline right over. We were flying a 160 + full main. Making around 7 knots. I don't think she points as high as my C25 but is very fast on a beam reach. Ken has no racing gear, not even telltails, so we have some work to do getting the boat preped. The single cylinder 7 HP Yanmar diesel makes a horrendous noise and shakes the boat something awful! I really appreciate my Honda 8.
We'll go sailing on Indiscipline next so Ken can get some ideas on race prep.
S2s were a great lakes company so the midwest is full of them, they are very nice boats. Most do not sail as well as the owners would like but they are designed and built in a way that makes their owners feel very proud. Always top grade materials. There is a 24 footer on a trailer in our club yard that someone could buy for 5k.
Hey Jim... It sounds like that whale was headed directly into the kelp. Can they swim through that stuff? Wish we could have made it out to see them that last, infamous time I went out with you!
Dave - yes the whale was heading into the Point Loma kelp. Don't know why but I often see them in there. I think they dive and swim out staying in 100 to 200 feet of water.
Exist... yes! I've given lesson to several groups of sailors on L dock. Every and any C25/250 National Association member is invited to sail with me and the rest of Fleet 7 anytime you are in San Diego. Since I sail nearly every day, I do mean anytime. Gary and I are going to "brush" the S2 versus his C25 TR and we'll see if we can make my friend Ken a racer.
Frank, this S2 is a 1980 and looks like its brand new. Must have been a Great Lakes freshwater boat for many years to look this good. Sails nice but I think the 160 backwinds the main when you're trying to point, plus the mainsheet and traveller are strangely placed behind you when you're at the wheel. Sailed like a bus compared to my C25 sports car!

Otherwise, it should create a smooth slot, and Bernoulli says that'll make it go faster.
Exi... Jim's a great host on Indiscipline--he took me out three times while I was in SD on business. Just bring your own...... no, I won't say it. Bring a sixpack.
They get like $45/head for 4 hours. The boats don't have to run more than 2 miles out. Also they expect tips. Renting a C250 costs $45/hr.

Captain JimB's offshore sailing school. Sign up now for the August 2005 3 week offshore sailing school. Students will sail from San Diego to Catalina, Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island and return.
Special rate for C25/250 National Association members, 100% discount ($0.00).
Thats my planned ad. What do you think?
Captain's license already led to an invite to crew in the Newport-Ensenada race.
The school advised me to get new insurance. I think its going to go up from $100 per year to about $200. I'll up to a million dollar liability. Students will sign a waiver. With the new insurance I can do up to 12 charters per year.
