Left the house yesterday, 18 fahrenheits at 4 am........Noon we were on Lady Kay.....78F.....much, much better. Got invited by my slip neighbor to join a local sailing club raft-up and watch the Christmas parade.....100 or so boats decorated with lights, sounds, Elvises and dancing girls. It was fun. (My octogenarian neighbor in the raft-up had just sailed his boat up from Puerto Rico....solo.)

Today sailed from Port Evereglades to Governors cut (that's local speak for Fort Lauderdale to Miami..) Ouside is the only way on this stretch. The entire ICW has bridges that either open, or have at least 65 feet clearance. Except for one in Miami. Seems the engineers got it backwards, its 56 feet, not enough for us) 15-25 knots....beam reach, full sail...highest I saw was 9.6 knots.. Since the wind was off shore the ride was pretty good. (Admiral and kids happy.)

Governors cut is narrow. At six pm the cruise ships were leaving Miami...a parade of them . When you pass them going in at about 200 feet they are VERY BIG...some of them have see through elevator banks bolted to the outside. Hmmmmm

Weather man is calling for "Hazardous Weather"......wind chill in the forties.....HaHa! I was sailing in my shorts and a sweater today, some passing boats had people in ski suits with hats and gloves...Floridians...

Oscar,

You're killing me with envy.

Tonight on the Upper Chesapeake: Gale warnings, 3+ foot waves, NW winds 30+ (gusting to 35+), air temp 16, wind chill -5, snow squalls.

I'm glad someone is having a good time.

Merry Christmas.

Sorry Jeff....I'm glad I did not leave her to suffer through that!

Dave, remember: Sit down, be quiet, keep your feet off the furniture and don't touch the flight attendants! Hace fun in winter wonderland.

Oscar... I can't touch the stews any more on AA?? I also learned recently that I can no longer turn on a GPS in the plane... Why would that be? (Somebody thinks it'll steal your signal?) It used to be fun checking out where we were, what town was going by, speed, ETA, and such with my little G-48. (I cheated once and watched the acceleration down the runway...) Now my 276C will have to stay dormant in the bag.

Oscar & Dave,

I'm not an avionics guru, but if GPS is a recieve-only device, how can this screw up on-board instruments? If the FCC thinks it's OK to run computers on the internet & cell-phones in flight (both of which would be transcievers), where's the logic?

"...if GPS is a recieve-only device, how can this screw up on-board instruments?..."

Here's an unoffical list of airlines that allow GPS... and those that prohibit it.

http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm

This page has quite a 'discussion' on the topic..

ClamBeach,

Thanks for the very detailed and current explanation. Still, I wonder how the FCC is going to finagle it so cell phones with their higher RF output will be OK to use on board in the future? Can they rig up a "cell-phone only" shielded zone on a plane to contain the RFI?

If they do, maybe they can make it a sound-proof section as well so we don't have to listen to a bunch of self-important jerks talking about their wonderful response to Viagra.

(I know, this isn't really sailing related, but since 3 MMC's opened the door...)

Cell phones don't work at altitude....trust me . The whole discussion is moot IMHO....

You'd think cell phones would actually work better at higher altitudes, but the only part that works is the part that automatically changes your time zone...the 'towers' go to zero.

Re GPSs...I am amazed at the number of airlines that do not have GPS equipped airplanes. I fly a corporate jet, we save many thousands of dollars in fuel and time...a big jet could save much more.

I believe the plan is they'll set up a cell in the plane and a radio link to the ground (as with "airfones").

Dave,

How many "blabbers" can you fit in steerage on a 747?

I gues that means I can crank up my MP-3 player and sing?...

Our 75's and new generation 73's have two GPS's, the 767 has 3. Only the old 737-300 and 500 are "steam jets".

O, glad you and your family are enjoying our warm weather. The way we tell the snowbirds here is they all wear shorts, sweaters and flip-flops when the temp drops to 40.
It will be in the 70s here tommorrow so will finish pressure washing the gull do and summer mold off the dock then take PennyII out for her exercise. Got to keep her slim and trim, you know.
Hope ya'll all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Frog-
40's? I bundle up at 65! Yikes! Took the dog for a walk last night, temp around 60. Came back and got a heavy jacket! I guess the warm weather thins the blood.

Oscar,
Glad you are having a good time. Did you make it to Boca Chita?

Tim, I agree with the 65 and I too bundle up, but that is how Floridians feel. The snowbirds, of whom I was talking, are a different breed of cat altogether.
74 the high for today and at this moment the lake is flat. Hope this afternoon Mother Nature will be kind and bring some wind.
Merry Christmas to all.

Nope, did not make it to Boca Chita. Did find Monument Island, in between Miami and Miami beach, right by the Venetian Isles. Has a memorial to Flagler on it. Technically uninhabited, but did have a few homeless people on it. After a brief encounter we each kept to our side of the island.......
